Wanting shy away from cheap ammo

I'm wanting to start using match ammo in my savage mkii and use it for some informal matches .when it comes to 22lr I'm not sure what the better match grade ammo is I know I'm still going to have to see what it likes but what are some starting brand to look for

One word of caution - experiment, as 22LRs can be tricky little beasts, so you never can be sure what any individual one likes until you try several different brands; the more expensive match ammo should shoot better, but not always. I had a high quality 22 match pistol that put me in the open class in IHMSA small bore pistol silhouette back in the 1980s. Pleasant surprise, since a little more oomph on the 100 yard small bore rams was always appreciated. After trying several match grade ammo brands, I tried it on some 40 grain copper plated lead Winchester HV ammo, and the pistol was in love. Not only that, it didn't vary that much among different lot numbers. Glad I experimented, and surprised by the results.

A relatively new one from SK is High Velocity Match - and priced above the lower end ammos but not up with Center X either. I'm having good results with my Bergara and 10/22 with Green Mountain barrel.

My MKii along with several friends that have MKii's are shooting Lapua Midas+ with very good results.
I did purchase a brick of SK Rifle Match but have not had the time to try them yet.

After you find that perfect ammo and you feel you're ready to set a new World Record you'll have a day youll wonder who switched a few Golden Bullets into your boxes.

This has happened with nearly every ammo we use, no idea what causes it but it happens.

Go to Creedmoor sports. Order one box of each of the SK ammo. Yes, it may cost you a couple hundred bucks and some time to get it all. Wait until you have all you ordered. then pick a good day and go shoot it.
shoot both at 50 and 100 yds. If you can get to a indoor range so much better. Then pick what your rifle likes and order a case of it. Shooting it side by side, at the same time is the only way you will see what it likes.
If you want order some High end stuff to shoot also. I run a bore snake down my bore between each type of ammo. And shoot 10-15 before trying to shoot a group. Shoot each kind of ammo at fifty yds first, then go back thru at 100 yds. this will tell you what your rifle likes.

I have a Savage with a HB and it actually shoots best with CCI Mini Mags. I've tried some of the SV stuff and several different "Match" ammo and it still mikes the Mini Mag best.

already planning on doing that im going to try a box or 2 of high end and mid grade ammo and see what the gun likes then go from there . i dont plan on breaking any records just shoot some club matches around here and maybe some in neighboring states i just like to squeeze the most out of my rifles.

My Savage MKII FVSR shoots Norma match very well. I took it out with Norma SK match, Eley black box, Rem match, old WW power Point and Federal UM1, at 100yds. All but the Rem shot around 1 1/4" at 100, which I was happy with as it was a swirling wind day, And it's a $200 gun dropped into a Boyds stock. The Eley black box put 4 into less than 1/2" and the wind caught my last round. It shoots the Norma into a little over .3 at 50yds. I need to try the Eley and Fed UM1 at 50 also. I have a case of Wolfe match extra from when Lapua made it that I need to try also. I just used Vortex on 12X which is not ideal for br. Mine does not shoot any CCI well or other "cheap" ammo well.

Another quirk you may find - the ammo that shoots best at 50 yards may NOT shoot best at 100 yards, so once you find the best performing ammo brands at 50 yards, re-fire them at 100 yards for comparison. You may find, in order to do best at both ranges, that you have to shoot one ammo that is a bit of a compromise at the other range. Only you can decide whether you wish to emphasize 50 yard accuracy or 100 yard accuracy as your standard for the choice. Or, you may find one that is best at both ranges.

Generally, I shoot what the rifle likes best at 50 yards and take whatever it gives at 100 yards; just be aware the such a choice may present itself. Good luck with your search.

Every single gun I own including 2 MkIIs is a gold-digger.
They ALL shoot the most expensive ammo best over the long run.

My MkIIs both have issues extracting certain brands.

I went looking for a brick of CCI standered to replace the one I just opened and all I could find were thunderbolts....

My wife's Ruger American RF with a 24X Scope had a 245 10X on the Green IBS RF-50 target with one brick of SK Match it liked at 50 yards. It hammered with that Lot but the next lot of it I tried was very so-so. Gata love 22 LR amo. Weight sorting might be worth the effort on mid price amo. Good luck.
