Wait or not or other 6 BR Build

Buddy sat on his thumbs and didn't order Savage PTA ( $655) from NSS. NSS sold out last Friday. NSS is saying no idea when might get more PTA's in from Savage. NSS is saying they will receive some duel port actions ( Palma) ($685) from Savage..
The Savage PTS is 4.41" spacing / and we use Choate Ultimate Varmint stocks
The Savage Duel Port (Palma) is 3.4" ( The action will have to be drilled to accommodate the Choate Stock.
I told him that I would wait or try to find a single shot Rem 700 clone. NSS has a clone but is $1300..
What you guys think?

Just my experience but Savage makes Awesome Bolt Action but their Big Drawback
at least so far is their triggers. I wish Jewel would create something.
Have you checked PT&G for Rem Clones? They used to have some pretty nice
options.
It's a tough call but I bought an after market trigger for my Savage 110 and it's
not even close to the Jewels on my Rems.
It will depend of course on how much perfection you're hoping for but there is
an old saying that says "The SWEETNESS of Cheap Price is long forgotten
after the BITTERNESS of Poor Quality is still remains"

Best Wishes

Even a "good" Savage trigger or replacement is not equal to a real benchrest trigger. That's not to say that you can not get use to them and shoot them well, many do. But, they still are behind the curve of what is being used in custom actions.

been there done most of that.
savage basic rifle actions suck for building target rifles( not competition rifles).
again been there done that.
savage single shot actions are a different story as are their red triggers
look for a used single shot lrpv or the ftr line.
check out shooters corner for used
my savage 308 on a single shot with savage red trigger is aprox 1/4 moa at 300, 1/2 moa at 600.

At this point in time, I am still committed to the Savage cult following. But I see no future in it. There are rumors that Trigger Tech is developing a trigger for Savages, may be successful, may not. We’ve been disappointed before. The Big Horn action is $645 more than the Savage target. In today’s cost climate, that is nothing. It compares little to what we are going to have to pay for powder, bullets, and primers. Then there is the cost for fuel to travel to matches and exorbitant cost for motels. For those of us heavily invested Savages, the Big Horn TL3 seems like a very practical solution. You might suggest that Your friend get off his thumbs and buy one before Jim sells out of those also ;)

The Bighorn Origin is a fine action - feature-rich and good build quality - and they go for substantially less than the TL-3. Street price just south of $900. I think they're a great value. I have one and I'm very happy with it.

The Mack Bros. action looks like something to investigate, as well. Not an altogether different price point than the Savage PTA and the R700 pattern is definitely appealing from a bits & pieces standpoint.
