Vv N555 temp stable in 6.5x47

40.1 gr Vv N555, 139 Scenar, CCI 450 mil primers, lapua brass.

Summer 101 degrees 2730 fps

Winter 55 degrees 2735 fps, second shot 2737 fps.

This is the most temp stable powder I've tested so far.

I want to try this powder using 123 scenars. I'm hoping to find a node around 2900 fps without pressure signs.

Where the heck is it 55 above zero in the winter! Thanks, good info.

Tom
Haha, in southern NV. 101 degrees is a nice cool summer day.

I was able to work the load up to 41.0 before seeing pressure. A long drop tube is a must for this load.

I agree. I’ve been shooting N555 for a while now and I’ve found the same thing with it being really temp stable. Not to say there isn’t change but it’s been on par or better than other powders I’ve used for sure.

What's your load using N555? It's been more stable than Varget and H4350 in my experience. Those powders can gain a fair amount of velocity once it gets hot outside.

I’m using it in a magnum. I’m at 56.8gr right now.

What do you think the burn rate is comparable to? The velocities and bulk make me think it's on par with Reloder 16. So a little slower than H4350.
Yeah tough to say. Definitely slower than 4350 and I’m pretty sure it’s slower than RL16. It feels more like an RL23 or 4831sc to me but I’m not 100% sure.

So a little slower than H4350.

Yes, that's where I'd put it. In the Viht range, it's either very similar to N160, or just a tad faster burning depending on the application. (Smaller than 30-06 / 284 Win cartridges see N555 with slightly heavier maxima than N160; 30-06 and 284, Viht's maximum N555 charges are a grain or two less.)

As N160 is considerably faster burning than nearly all relative burn rate tables show it, that puts it between H4350 and IMR-4831 most likely at the 'faster' end of that range, again depending on application. I certainly found it comparable when looking at H4350 alternatives in 7mm-08 with 160gn TMKs.

My primary use for the powder is in the 300 RSAUM with 200gn Hybrids where it performs very well. Charges are a shade higher than for IMR-4350 and a grain or two less than with Alliant Re19.

Here’s an older thread.

I have tried RL16, N555, and RL 23 in my 7 Saum. RL 16 and 23 were 3 grains apart for the same speed. N555 was exactly between them at 1.5 grains difference. Not a dense powder. So if you are getting close on case fill with H4350, you will most likely run out of room with N555

Good info. Now that I think about it, I think RL16 was bulkier than N555. It's been a while since I used RL 16 though. I'll have to play with it again to verify.

Regardless, N555 is working well for me and has produced the most accurate load in my rifle, the temp stability is a huge bonus.

I've got another rifle chambered in 6.5x47 lapua that I may try Vv N555 and 123 Scenars in.
