VV 568 loads

Anybody tried VV 568 in the 300 Norma Improved 35 or 300 PRC yet? Not really sure where the burn rate falls. I guess it’s a little faster than VV 570. Have heard “rumors” that is a Short Cut Version of 570.

Im using it in my 300 norma improved hunting rifle. Im using a 12" drop tube. 230 berger at a mild 2990 fps and single digit es for 10 shots multiple times now. Accuracy is phenomenal. Its definitely cooler burning than N570. Im only getting .001-.002 throat erosion per 100 rounds right now. It helps that its a mild load. I have a 15x tangent theta on the rifle and shoot off a bipod. The last three 3 shot groups I shot at 580 yds had .3-.8" vertical. Shot a 3" group at 1000 with it. Not bad for a 15x scope and a bipod. I did a test with a piece of peterson brass and N568. The node for it was 3030 fps and was 2 gr more than my lapua load at 2990. The first 5 firings the brass grew .004. From firings 6-30+ it only grew another .004. At over 30 firings the primer pocket felt almost brand new. I got a 160 lbs of N568 in from capstone last week. Set some aside for myself and then am keeping the rest for any local guys that buy a rifle a off me. Cant ship powder. Ill definitely be trying it in my 338 norma improved.

From the 1:1 test this morning. Not what I expected honestly:
Executive summary:
N570, Hornady 285 ELD-M HBN coated: Avg 5 shots 2,861, ES 49
N568, Hornady 285 ELD-M HBN coated: Avg 5 shots 2,,791, ES 12

The boring detail:
Test rife, Savage 110 Elite Precision 30" 338 Lapua. In my 26" 12 Magnum the same load made 2,828FPS. This combo is a 1/3 MOA shooter for me.

Cases were S&B, 7th firing, annealed, sized 0.002" bump, no trim necessary. Primers Federal LR Magnums. (I have found UG LRM to give lower ES and velocity but no-one has those so I used Federals). Primer pockets gauged and still tight. Yes those S&B cases hold up well. In my 112 they have 117.46 grains of water capacity. I haven't checked them for capacity after firing in the 110.

The load was 94.0 grains of each powder, weighed on my lab scale. The N570 grains weigh ~0.06 grains, the N568 ~0.04 grains. PLEASE NOTE: My loads are over max per Vihtavuori. I load well over SAAMI OALs, and HBN coat my bullets. I have never had any indications of pressure excursions and, as you see above, I enjoy good case life. Chacun a son gout; don't try a direct replication in your gun.

N570, like RE33 is a frustrating powder for those seeking exact loads, because of the granule size. I usually end up +/- 0.02 grains. I did not adjust my powder measure after throwing the N570 chargers (which were added to to get exact weight), I noticed the N568 charges threw ~2 grains lighter. Given the smaller grain size I did not expect that.

I like Vihtavuori powder, but..... althought Vihtavuori *claims* lot-to-lot consistency that has not been my experience at all, and that includes their single-based powders too. In fact, I have seen quite a few variations one powder tub to another, and I store my powder properly. My primary conclusion is N568 is very similar top N570 but subject to the usual Vihtavuori lot-to-lot variations I have come to expect.

Considering the the percentage that 1 grain of N570 represents of 90+ grain load I don’t sweat it.

I don't either, but just in case you misunderstood my writing, the charges were *exactly* 94.0 grains, +/- 0.02 gr for N570 due to granule size and spot on for N568. As weighed individually on my FX120

I'm not understanding your conclusion with 568, you just tested it with exact same grain load but said it was slower speed but was because of lot variation. Did you test different lots? Because my experience is the same as yours, 568 is slower that 570 and everbody i know has come to the same conclusion that has tried both powders 568 is slower than 570.
So far I'm very pleased with the accuracy and ES numbers 568 has produced in my 30-28 ive got some final.load development to do with it still.

my 300 gr bergers with 570 in a 338 edge do not have a poor es like that.
me thinks it aint the powder but a combination of things.
300 at 2880 is a bit warmer than you.
weight sorted adg brass vv570 hbn 300 berger fed 215( weight sorted) just over 4" coal.\
2000 yard group/score load

Yea
My 338 edge with Berger or badlands has no problems getting good es with N570.

It sounds like you didn't give the powders a proper load development. ES of 49 is impossible if you did a powder charge test and picked a node. Taking a load from a rifle and throwing it in a different barrel isn't an apples to apples comparison. Both powders require a drop tube to get full performance out of. Without a drop tube Im several grains under pressure when I run out of room. In my 26" 338 norma improved my N570 load with 300 gr bergers is 2860 fps. Single digit ES and stupid accurate. Held 1.1" vertical at 580 yds for 5 shots the last time I shot it. Your gonna wanna use .004 or more neck tension.

Interesting
I thought 338 Norma improved had more case capacity than that.

To be clear your saying N568 is appearing to be slower burning than N570?
If so I’ll have to try some.

I've done very minimal testing with a 300 PRC. Proof 9 twist, 200 ELDX, Lapua Brass, 26" barrel.
I started low and had a charge of 78.6gr. Was getting around 2,760 fps on the labradar. Not great ES though. After researching others experiences online. It looks like I'm about 3-4 gr below where I should be with a 200-215 gr bullet. I also don't recall the case fill with my load.

Ryan - do you mind explaining the the why behind the 0.004 neck tension? Versus the .001-.002 most are used to?

Sometimes extra neck tension allows for a more uniform ignition and a certain amount of pressure to build prior to the release of the bullet. This can be a big part of tuning your load to your barrel. Every barrel, powder, primer, bullet combination is different. Just have to test and find out what combination works the best.
