VV 540 in 224 Valkyrie

Ironworker -

Howdy!

Years ago when Kaltron-Pettibone distributed VV powders, I inquired about potential application and uses for the VV5XX series.
They told me that based on testing, the best application intended for these powders was/is for use w/ the heaviest bullet weights in each.

Despite their recommendation ( I already had bought a can of VV560 )....
I tried VV560 in-lieu of VV160, checking on obtainable accuracy, pressure signs; and velocity levels. I was shooting .224" cal Hornady 55SX bullets ( in my .22-35 Remington wildcat, from a 24" barrel, using FED Large Magnum Rifle primers. Just like they said, velocity and even accuracy were down, compared to load using VV160.

I had occasion to re-set ( same can ) of VV560 when shooting my re-barrelled rifle chambered for .22-35Remington.... but using 75"A"-Max. The barrel was a 28" SS 1-8 .
Again... velocity and accuracy were down, compared to an excellent load I found that used 40.5gr AA3100 and Fed Large Rifle Magnum primers.

That surprised me, because at that time; the 75's were @ the upper end of the .224" cal bullet wt scale.... w/ the heavier stuff becoming more prevalent in subsequent years.

For the 500 series VV powders..... I say yeh.... apply them to the heaviest bullet weights per calibre.

I DK if that helps any ?
