Vortex vs Nightforce.

I'm looking for a better scope for a 223 that will be used on paper and vermin. I have a Nightforce NXS 5.5 X 22 and like it very much. This is mounted on the custom rig. Was thinking about a Vortex (I don't know which version) as opposed to a Nightforce SHV for a factory rifle. Thinking I want a 3X15 to 16X. Any thoughts on the better Vortex scopes?

Yesterday I had a Kahles 624i to mount for a client so we pulled out some glass to compare. 2 Vorteks, I don't remember what exact models. I'll get it on Tuesday when I'm back in the shop. 1 FFP Vortek in the 20x power range about $1000. The other Vortek was second FP with about a 16X top end about $500. A 5.5x25x50 NF NSX and the Kahles 624i. 3 of us focused the scopes to our own eyes and looked at boulders and shade about 400 yards away. We unanimously agreed that the FFP $1000 Vortek was by far the worst glass of the bunch. The NF and the Kahles were very close with the NF having a slight edge if anything. And the second FP Vortek was better than the one at twice it's price but a very far cry from the NF or Kahles. If the NF SHV has similar glass to the NSX, which I've heard it does, it should be an excellent value with glass many times better than the Vortek.

I know that I'm comparing some very expensive glass and FFP and second FP all together with mid grade glass but that's what we had on hand yesterday. To say I was unimpressed with the Vortek would be an understatement. In fact for the money I would say they sucked. I know there are a lot of Vortek fans out there and I'll probably get flamed by them but all 3 of us agreed and if any of you would have been there you would agree too. It was just that obvious.

we had the same problem with vortex. glass not good past 1000 yds! we had 4 bad ones in a row. no problem they replaced them but I don't have the time to keep mounting scopes to try and find a good one. we have been putting on some sightrons and really like them great glass but wish they had a zero stop.

The 2 Vortex we looked through were the Viper 4x16 HSLR and a Viper PST 6x24. The other thing I forgot to mention is the Vortex also seemed to have about 1/3 less field of view.
I think the SHV is a great choice.

I don't own one YET, but I've looked through a couple SHVs at long range. Do have an NXS and I'd say the glass is comparable. I owned one Vortex and it was my last. Go with the SHV.

There are a few for sale in the Scope want ads on this site. Here's one.
