Vortex Viper PST vs. Sightron SIII

Has anyone here had a chance to check out the new Vortex Viper PST scopes? I am looking closely at a Sightron SIII 8x32x56, but I might have a chance to pick up a Viper PST 6x24x50mm for a good price in a couple of months and was wondering if it's worth the wait. The Sightron has a 1/4 MOA dot reticle, while I could get the Viper with my choice of either MOA or MRad subtensions. I intend to use the rifle mostly for precision shooting, but might take it into the field too.

Sightron scopes are known for very good tracking. Any idea how the Vortex Scopes track and hold up? I have two sets of the Vortex binocs and the optics are excellent, so I'm not too worried about that end of things.

Quite a few years ago I quite believing all the advertising hype associated with all new and improved optics that show up every year. It's as simple as this if it not a proven product I'm not interest. I know absolutely nothing about the Vortex scopes, they may be great or just another piece of junk and there's more then enough of that offered in optics. Then there's always that little matter of economics that seems to get in our way. The only reason I don't own S&B scopes is that I can't afford them but in all honesty I have probably wasted more then enough money on inferior optics to warrant purchasing at least one Schmidt & Bender. My ill advised purchase of two high end IOR Validada's seem to come to mind. I own several scopes which three are Sightron SIII's, I don't believe there's a better scope for the money out there for under 800.00. You can now get your choice of four reticals in the SIII 8-32X56 , 1/4 dot-LRD, 1/8 dot-LRTD, mil-LRMD and fine x-hair-LRFCH. My advise to you is buy something that time proven and the absolute best you can afford.

I haven't had first hand experience with the PST yet, but I do have first hand experience with the company, and I own three Viper 6.5-20's. IMHO their is no optics company in the world with better customer service/warranty than vortex optics. that in itself is enough for me to know that i'll be buying at least one pst in a few months.

the regular vipers are a really great scope for the money too, i've been shooting mine for a little over a year now and they have helped me win 4 long range matches in the past few months (including one today)

do a search on vortex custromer service and warranty, I think you'll be impressed ;)

Sightron scopes are great too but as far as price point for what you get the vortex has them beat IMO

hope this helps a little,

Are you basing this opinion on first hand experience with with SIII scopes?

Yes Nomo, I have first hand experience with both manufacturers. As I stated, the sIII's are great scopes and every bit as good as the vortex IMO, but the vortex is more cost efficient thats why they get my vote ;)

Thanks for the input guys. Like I said, I have some positive experiences with Vortex binocs, very good optics, but know little about the scopes.

If they were equal in price I guess I would buy the Sightron based on reputation, but I might have the chance to pick up a Vortex PST at a real good price so I thought I'd ask. I agree with RJ, there's no point in paying ANY money for a bad or questionable product, but if they are of equal quality, why pay more? That's why I'm askin'!

Anybody else have any experience with Vortex riflescopes, or maybe even the PST line in particular?
