Volume of gas released from a barrel.

Interesting question! From what I can find, the gasses leaving the barrel but not interacting with the atmosphere would be around 2.25 to 3.0 liters for a 50gr charge. Of course the weight of these gasses is the same as the weight of the powder. Also, the volume of these gasses is figured at room temperature.

That is an interesting question.

LC Tikka,

I've read the volume of gas produced by a charge of smokeless powder is approximately 77 times the volume of the original charge. Eventually, all of it leaves the barrel and cartridge.

Thanks for the info.
Looking into muzzle brake options to contain or deflect the gas flow.
