VLD's: more critical seating depth ?

Generally are the VLD's that much more picky for getting the proper seating depth to tune a load or is it urban legend?

i shoot the 210 VLDs in my heavy gun 0.010 inches into the lands gives 0.3 MOA, 7RUM 180 VLD > 0.300 inches bullet jump gives bug whole groups. 257 wby with 115 VLD with 0.225 inches jump with bug whole groups.

I think Berger recommends pretty aggressive changes when developing a load. The step by step process might even be on their website. But i think it starts by putting them 0.010 inches into the lands then 0.010 inches off the lands. They then say go 0.040 inches in increments on out from the lands upto the point that the bullet is not going to make full neck contact with the bullet side walls.

I have either had them shoot pretty easily or not at all no matte how or what i tried to do to make them shoot. This would be the short answer to your question. It will be good to see what others have to say.

I decided to shoot 105 VLD's this past year in my BRX . I use Varget and Wolf SM primers and tested my bullets jammed .010, just touching, .010 off, .020, .030 and .040. I ended up with .030 off the lands with great results, .4"group @ 200yrds. 5 shot groups consistantly. Take the time to find the sweet spot for your load/gun. I was able to go from marksman to master this year in f-class long range and feel the extra time spent sure helped.

Short answer, Absolutely. The potential of the VLDs for accuracy and a high BC is wonderful, but you must first find the depth your gun likes the best.

Since I use my rifle to hunt, I didn't want to jam the bullets.
So, when I started to work up loads for my 6mmbr, I set the 95 vld .030 off the lands with a range of charges of Varget. Groups ranged from .22 to .45 in @ 100 yds.

Load development finished.
