Vld vs juggernaut

Need advise , can get my hands on both berger vld's and juggernauts ,both in 185 gr , my question is should I take both and work up loads on each for target shooting, in case there is a shortage again. Or should I just take the juggernauts and settle with them. I have been told the vld's are very seating sensitive and maybe not suitable . I shoot a 1 in 12 twist 32 inch barrel .thanks

Have you considered the Berger 155.5 FB or the Sierra 155 Palma (2156)? It's what I shoot in my 1:12 twist 30" Krieger barrel. Using 8208, I get them both to 2995 fps. I worked up a load for both in case- 1) I couldn't get one of them and 2) if I could get both to shoot well, the Sierra is cheaper. They shoot very well out to at least 600 yards (farthest our range is). I just ordered another 1000 of the 2156's from Mid-South Shooters.

Now on to the Juggernaut. I tried the 185's and did not find them to be any advantage over the 155.5 FB or 2156 at 600 yards in my rifle. It is a great bullet and pretty easy to get a load developed if you go to the heavier bullets. The VLD's I have tried both in .308 (155) and .223 (90) can be made to shoot well but I have found them to be finicky and so I had to work with the seating depth more. If you go the 185's I would work up a load for both for the same reason I mentioned above. YMMV

Just my $.02.

At what distance will you be shooting out to? I shoot from 300 to 1000 yds switched from the vlds and went to the juggs. The juggs are a lot more forgiving than the vlds are,and you are right the vlds are very sensitive to the seating depth.

I have shot both. Found the VLDs easy enough to find a seating depth for, just need to check your throat erosion and chase the lands every 500-1000 rounds or so. The Juggernauts have a slightly higher BC and are more forgiving in regards to seating depth. I think your theory on having both in case the shortage never ends has merit.

Thanks for the replies , yes I have already tried the 155's hybrid with excellent results out to 1000 yards getting 3050 fps with 46.9 varget that is why I am going to try the 185's , which will be better in the wind, I think I will get both vld's and juggernauts , going by your replies , and I will always have a substitute along with the 155 hybrids

Grimstod, somewhere between 2600 and 2700 fps i hope

Go with the Juggernauts if you can get em, with a 32 inch barrel and enough freebore you should easily hit the 2750 ish node with Varget, N-150, 2000MR, etc......Several powders will get you there and beyond if you wanna push it.......Good luck.

Not worth the trouble. According to JBM Ballistics you will lose .1 moa in a 10 mph crosswind using the 185 juggernauts at 2700 fps compared to 155 hybrids at 3050 fps. This was calculated at 600' ASL, 72 F. However, this changes if you can increase the velocity of the 185's to 2750 or even 2800 fps.
