You can lead a horse to water, but ........
Morning Everyone,
I'm kinda new to the 6.5 Caliber (6.5 X 55 cartridge) and still learning and testing my way through finding loads that work well in my rifle. She's a Ruger M77 Target Grey that I had converted to 6.5 from 22-250 that I discovered is simply worthless as a target accuracy rifle. So my gunsmith put a Hart MG barrel on her using a new Pacific tool reamer to better accomodate the VLD bullets. And as I started my testing, based alot on the suggestion of a friend who has a custom rig in the same caliber, but has a 1:8.5 twist whereas mine is a 1:8 barrel. I started concentrating on using Berger 140 VLD's and Sierra 142 VLD's being pushed by either Varget, IMR 4895, IMR 4350 or VVN150 & 160. Testing has been trial and error, but the Sierra's seemed to consistently give me better groups than the Bergers. So after almost 200 Bergers shot in 5 shot groups, I said adios to the Bergers and started concentraing on the Sierras that have all along given me consistently good groups, but nothing I'd want to write home about. But yestedray, the IMR 4350 came through for me and suddenly the groups came together after changing the load amount to what another 6.5 shooter recommended. But the thing I found amazing that after shooting a group of targets using 43 grs of IMR 4350 and the next groups were shot at 43.5, what a world of difference as they groups open up from holes touching (@43 grs) and almost 1.5" (@43.5grs.) I've never seem that drastic a change in just 1/2 grain in a load. Now granted, this was at 100 yds and I know this caliber is a 1K shooter, but still what a dramatic change in POI grouping for .05 more in a powder load. Is this all just reflective of how sensitive these VLD's shoot as I've be hearing they are super sensitive and a matter of .01 can change everything? BTW, I've ordered up some Lapua Scenars 123's to test as well, but the 139's are very difficult to find in stock anywhere including Bruno's, Sinclair, and Powder Valley. Any thoughts on the sensitivity issue would be appreciated. Thx!
