Good Afternoon All
In recent times I missed out on a custom rifle in 30 super, the seller withdrew it at the last minute, to say I was disappointment is an understatement, so I have decided to start collecting bits and pieces to build a rifle in 30 super for hunter class bench rest, I know there are calibers better suited but I have decided I want a 30 super rifle so that is what I am doing.

There are many things I don't know about building such a rifle, the first question I have is when you are having the chamber reamed do you have the dies custom made to suit the chamber, or do you buy a reamer and set of dies to suit the reamer, do you buy brass and hope it is right or do you have it made to suit the chamber.

I have many more questions but they will come later.

maybe you should purchase a production rifle of sorts & proceed to the best of your abilities!

Trevor, While I am not, nor have I ever been a competitive rifle shooter, you may want to consider buying a used benchrest rifle first. No offense, but if you haven't already done so, you can get experience without spending as much as on a new build. A reputable retailer that I know of is Shooter's Corner, Bob White. There may be others. May not be your dream caliber but you could gain valuable experience.

Years ago I built a race car and spent a lot of money on it. Loved building it and the creative craftsmanship and fabrication but did not care for the competition, especially the lack of a decent enjoyment to effort/expense ratio. A hard, expensive lesson.

I am not the person to ask but it seems no one wants to answer your question. Talk to shooters that compete with 30 super and see if they will give you the maker and number of the best reamer for that cartridge. In the sport of benchrest very small changes to the chamber can pay big dividends in how the gun shoots and how much work is required to make and maintain the brass. Once you have done the research get that reamer and build your rifle. Some makers can make the dies from the print others want 3 pieces of fired brass. The three pieces of fired brass can be tough with out dies!! if I were going this route I would contact Randy Robinett, he has much experience with hunter class rifles. And makes BIB bullets, he would be my go to guy for a hunter rifle.

Thank you for the replies, the point of the questions are I wish to build a very accurate hunter class rifle in super 30 from the ground up I do not own a rifle in that caliber, but that is the caliber I want and I would like to do it right from the start and not hear you should have done this or that. This is the reason for the questions before I head down this path.

A super 30 and the 300 H&H both share the 375 H&H as a parent case there are only slight differences between the two, but the super 30 was first.

Way to big for any type of benchrest. If you want a big 30, do a 300 WSM. They are easy to load for and very accurate. It will shoot rings around your 30 super. It has set a bunch of World records in 1000 yard BR and wins a lot of aggregates. Plus makes a good hunting round. Norma brass is good and lasts a long time. Research the Web for it and you will see.

Do a 10 or 11 twist, use H4350 and a 210 Berger VLD HUNTING bullet. You will love this cartridge. The barrel will last a lot longer also. Matt

I think dkhunt14 is giving you some good insight. I have shot both and would go with the 300 WSM.

If you are going to compete in HBR, you need to rethink your choice of cartridge.
