Vihtavuori N140 in a 6br / 6.5x47

Will N140 work in a 6br or 6.5x47 shooting 105/140 hybrids? I switched over from Varget to N140 in my FTR rifle and I'm gonna stick with it. I want to build a PRS rifle and was wondering if N140 will work in either a 6br or 6.5x47

Or even N150 but I would prefer to keep it simple and just run one powder for both guns

It depends on what you are willing to accept for performance.

The goals of;

1. using only one powder for multiple cartridges/bullets and

2. finding loads that are more than mediocre as far as accuracy

are diametrically opposed.

Ponder for a moment why the latest Hodgden/IMR powder burn rate chart has 148 powders listed and still does not list every powder available.

I use Varget with 107's in a 6BR.

I use N150 in the same 6BR with DTAC and Berger 115's.

I will start load development with some 125gr bullets in the same 6BR this week and will start with N560.

Same cases, same primers, same rifle.

N140 in a 6BR with a 105gr bullet would probably be pretty darn good.

Sounds of squealing tires on pavement. Uh what's that, a 125gr 6mm bullet, tell us about it please???

I am loath to hijack Tony1320's thread. Maybe a quick answer so as not to seem to be ignoring you and then we can get back to the OP.

It is an experimental bullet from a custom bullet maker. He has been kind enough to collaborate with me on a bullet for a special application. I am trying to come up with the heaviest 6mm bullet that will stabilize adequately in an 8 twist barrel.

Keep in mind this is a PRS rifle I'm not looking for benchrest accuracy

I'm not against using N150 it would just be convenient if N140 would work

Good to know at least N150 will work though

Did you mean N140 in a 6br with a 105gr bullet?

Thanks for responding and hoping you'll start a thread so we can observe progress.

Yes. LOL A 105gr bullet in a 6BR with N140. I fixed my post, thank you.

Yes, I understand you are seeking PRS accuracy, that is the context in which I replied.

It is not unusual for Benchrest shooters to have 4 or 5 different powders to use in a rifle with the same case, same cartridge, same primer, and same bullet.

Hi from Portugal !

I have been a benchrest shooter since 2014, rimfire and central fire (100, 200 and 300 m, the sole central fire federated shooting disciplines in Portugal with scoped rifles).
Used to shoot only 6PPC with N133, excellent at 100 and 200m but not so good at 300 due to the low weight of the bullets useable with my 1:14 rifle in windy conditions...

For 6BR Norma I currently use both N140 and N150 with 105gr Berger/Lapua bullets with good results in cold weather (not tested in summer yet!). Rifle SMH (a German final finishing and assembling of Kelbly action). Lapua brass and Federal match/CCI BR4 primers.
Accuracy at 300 m well within 1 inch circle.

All the best

Both N140 and N150 are widely and successfully used in this pair of cartridges in the UK. N150 is now virtually a staple for the 6BR with 105s here. For the 6.5X47L, although Viht lists loads data for both, I'd lean towards N150 as a better match with heavier than 120gn bullets.

Don't discount the better 123s and 130s in this cartridge - the 123gn Scenar + N150 at just below 3,000 fps (30-inch barrel) was one of my favourite combinations in F-Class with this cartridge, and I'd have thought it well suited to PRS. For magazine use, the 130 Berger AR-Hybrid Tactical should be quite a performer in the cartridge.)
