Vihtavuori n135

Well, I will get flamed but velocity is a totally irrelevant number. Sparkers bullet was able to get to the target and best the other competitors and win. All that is necessary. Congratulations Sparker. The targets results count, not velocity. Advice given to me by 2 long time 1000 yd shooters (record holders by the way) when I started to try 1000 yd was, "You short range guys get fixated on velocity. Slow it down some you will learn it is more accurate at longer rannge".

Chatting with a fella at the gun shop yesterday, and we got to 6BR loads. He was using Varget and suggested that his best loads were around 1900fps. 2900, surely? nah 1900.
He told me the range that he shot at - they only have 600yds and the penny dropped. "Do you mean 1900 at the target? " "oh no, 1900 at the muzzle" - 'It's what the electronic target says" I explained that the Silver Mountain targets give you the speed at the target. He still didn't get it. Move on.

Talking of speed - one of our club members cleaned the 3 short ranges with a new barrel - 284 Win. He changed from whatever to 180g Bergers and found a node at 49g of 4350 (actually ADI2209). Previously sending other 180's down with 52g.The groups were just unreal. I am considering taking up stamp collecting or ballroom dancing. Stuff it, I'll stick to FTR, at least I won't be competing against him.

Rember speed kills. { Group size too ] Slow is the way to go. For me anway. Tommy Mc
I think the explosion of chronographs has helped make speed more popular. I develope my load then out of curiosity get out the Lab Radar and see what it is. The only thing I have used the chrono for really is to tune ES. Time of flight does have a bearing on wind drift so given a fast node or a low node of equal accuracy, I will go for the speed. For me I am not looking for anything but to put each individual shot fired in the 10 ring. Not the same thing as shooting groups. At a group shot there should be a 1% deduction for each shot on a target out of the 10 ring. After all the purpose of a rifle is to hit something. Remember the first shot in a group is a no skill required shot.

I got my first 30-BR in January and won our club 100 yd score match in February. I have 2 chronys but I still haven’t measured the velocities for my 30-BR loads. I don’t know why you would get flamed on here for stating that velocity isn’t very important, it’s called AccurateShooter, not FastShooter.

To some it's all about the numbers. To me it's about having a rifle tuned better than most on the line at a match. That requires testing and work. It's about hitting the point of aim, not a documented odessy of how you arrived. Some are interested in the journey. I am interested in the competition, the journey is a necessary evil to have success at the end of the journey.

OP did not mention caliber. My best groups with 6BR and 80 gr bullets (Berger or Barts) is N135. 64 -68 grain I use N133. Many tiny groups. 6Dasher did not like N135 as well, Varget is preferred with 105 Barts. If you cant get Varget, use H4895.
