Vihtavouri 100 series vs 500 series burning rates…

I going to test some different powders in the N-560 to 570 burning rate range. Does anyone have any first hand experience with 565 or 568 as compared to N160, 165 or 170?

The 5 series are slower (burning rate) than the 1 series. I've been playing with 160-560, 165-565 in a 243 most of this past summer. The "barrel heat" for just 5 rounds is quite different (much warmer) with the 5 series vs 1 series, That being said you use a couple grains more powder with the 5 series than the 1. Not much change in accuracy between the 2, meaning preferred loads were almost identical (group wise) between the 1 and 5 series group wise. My rifle prefers loads at the high end with both 1 or 5 series (31" 8 twist).

The 500 series is double base powder while the 100 series is single base. The 500 series burns with a hotter flame. Id recommend using 100 series where accuracy is most important rather than speed. 500 series where more speed is wanted. All are accurate, i use vv powder exclusively.

The one thing that I definitely don't need is more heat. I'm testing in one of my .22 Creedmoors so there's no a lot of room for excessive heat from the standpoint of barrel life. I'll be testing N-165 and see what load density and velocity that yields.

I use N540, N550, N560, N150, N160 and N165, Seabeeken basically summed it up.

The 5 series also tend to be quite "dirty" if your not running it at the higher end of the load, if its for a competition/varmint rifle id start with 1 series but if its a hunting rifle fill that case up with some 5 series and enjoy the speed

What bullet and barrel specs are you shooting with n165? Have you any velocity to report?

Both of my .22 Cm rifles have Kreiger 4 groove 8 twist barrels at 21 inches and suppressed. I haven’t tried any N-165 yet but I have shot N160 and Rl 26. With the 69 grain Lapua Scenar they will tune in the 3480 or 3520 depending on the powder. Rl 26 being the faster of the two.

I have had really good results with VV powders. I use N165 in my 6.5-284 pushing a Bondstrike 143gr bullet and it is a one-hole shooter. I use N165 in my .257 Weatherby pushing a 110 NAB shoots a cloverleaf. I use N570 in my 26 Nosler pushing yet again the Bondstrike 143gr bullet and it shoots a bug hole!

I’d be interested in your n165 findings once you do start testing

Might want to look at N-160 for, the .22 Creedmoor ( close to 4350 Burn ) I use it in 6 XC and 6.5 Creed and it,.. "Shoots Well"
