Velocity Difference In Stock Savage Rifles??

I have just purchased 2 Savage rifles in .308 Caliber. One is a Model 10 FP with a 24" barrel, and the other is a 12F/TR with the 30" Stainless barrel. With all things equal ammunition wise, what velocity difference will the extra 6" of tube make? I can't find anything in any of my manuals that show 30" barrel velocity data. Has anyone run any real world chronograph tests? Thanks in advance, Bill T.

Some time ago, a test was done, by Jason Baney,, I think), the results posted on this web site. Started with a 30" and cut off 1" at a time, taking chrono readings. The loss was approx. 10 fps per inch. I took notice, since I thought there would be a greater loss.

Thank you for the quick reply. That is about the range I was thinking, except for extremely slow powders that might offer up a little more. Bill T.

I don't know how this stacks up against the short barreled guns, but I chrono'd some Fed GMM 168's from my F/TR and the ave. was 2810 fps.

The velocity test was done by Jackie Schmidt using a 6BR-chambered rail gun. We started at 33" and cut it down in 1" increments to 28". Total velocity loss was 40 fps. Loss was a very even 8 fps per inch.

This was with a stout but not max load of H4895 and 105s.

It would be interesting to see what happens when the load was re-tuned to the barrel length. I have found that changing to a slightly faster powder can gain velocity back after cutting the barrel.

My brother shoots a Savage M12 F/TR .308 Win. He's getting 2896fps using 44.5gns of vv-n140,155gn Palma bullet. This is in N Florida. Good luck. gpoldblue@yahoo.com
