varmit bullet selection for 260

I am looking to develop a (3100-3450fps) varmint load for an 8 twist 260. I want to avoid tipped projectiles.

It seems I am limited to a 85 and 100 gr sierra, and a 90gr speer.

Will these bullets come apart at this spin rate?

How are they ranked for accuracy?

How are they ranked for terminal effects?

Thanks

I shoot an 83gr FB's in my 8 twist 260 Rem. quite often. They group under .5" for 10 shots @100 yds. all day long, which is not bad for an over driven bullet. They are very pleasant to shoot. I like the light recoil and high velocity. They would probably group a lot tighter if I had better bench shooting techniques. Unless you have a rough barrel, they should hold together with no problems.

Thanks jesse, bobc.

BOBC, did you mean 85gr sierras. I am not familiar with an 83 gr bullet in 6.5. could give a description or link of the bullet.

Jesse, you using a very slow burning powder for your bullet/case combo. What was the reasoning behind that, accuracy, barrel life, etc?

michaelbz the 83 gr HP FB is my own handmade 6.5 bullet. Its made on a custom trim match jacket with a little thicker wall than most 85 / 95 gr bullets. It should stand up well to very high velocities and is quite accurate in most 6.5' cartridges. Dr. Lou Palmasano told me long before he passed away, the few I sent him shot some real tight 300yd groups. I agreed if he wanted more, I would make them for him.
BOBC.

If tipped bullets are better, why aren't the majority of the benchrest group shooters using them? They cost much less than benchrest bullets. Maybe they are more for hunting than benchrest competition.

I use 100gr Nosler Bts with 41.5gr of Varget, BR2 primers and R-P neck sized brass to a 2.83" OAL. Ragged dot performance in my 40X

95 V-Max are popular for a reason. Accurate and deadly. You also might check the Berger hunting line and Lapua Scenars.

Cheers,
Richard

Not necessarily better for "Benchrest", likely better for varmint. Even a tipped match bullet due to the larger cavity that accepts the tip stem they are likely to open quicker than an OTM of similar construction.

It is my experience that with standard SAMI 260 chambers, light bullets do chamber well for best accuracy. Need shorter free boar for varmint bullets.

I like the 100 grain Amax, but it has a red plastic tip thingy

The 107 grain 6.5 Sierra Match King can kill varmints but is somewhat erratic. About .25 inches of the front of that bullet is void (empty) increasing the length somewhat. I shoot these at coyotes.
