Varmint stock ?

If you were to build your ultimate walking varmint rig...What stock would you use and WHY??? I've been looking at a lot ... What's your pro's and con's to your choice. Lots to choose from. I kinda like the McMillan A1-3 with wide forearm and higher check piece along with the finger groove on forearm. It's not the lightest of weight but should be close. This is also only for shooting with a bipod with occasional bench work for load testing.
Thanks again

I have a Manners T3 on my 223. Awesome setup. Good stock for a multitude of uses. It's their hybrid Tactical/Hunting stock.

A3

Just a little less weight than the A5 i find it very nice for a calling gun with a #4 barrel.

For what you are doing why not an HS Precision, way less money and the used market is constant and I have a bunch and they work really well for varminting and on a bench. They run 200.00- - 300.00 for a new take off versus paying 600.00 for a McMillan.

If it's a walker then HS makes a little short one that takes a Rem Var barrel and has a fore end that's in between a sporter and a Sendero style. I've got one on a 20" 6br and it makes for a nice light compact walker that goes in and out of the truck easily.

If I wanted something lighter then the varmint stocks on the old Sako rifles are hard to beat. I've got an A1 in 222 that has what can be compared to a #5 taper barrel that's very handy and light but my favorite is one that was on an old 50s Riihimäki 222, it was just a bit shorter than the A1 stock but had a wider fore end, barrel was a heavier profile but was shorter.

When I think of a walker, I'm thinking of something with a 22" barrel max, something you are going to use for 300yds and something that slips easily in and out of a vehicle. The tactical style stocks just don't seem to fit that for me.

Com'on guys these prices are nuts. I started out with a branch and a piece of rubber tube and killed a number of vermin.

I like the SAKO varmint pattern, too, but take a look at the Winchester Marksman pattern from McM. Dakotata Predator/Varmint rifles use a similar pattern. Other companies may have a similar pattern.

That's funny !!! :) I used doubled up rubber bands on my 1st slingshot !!

The HS might be the way to go. I have a Rem 700 VSSF II (short lived rifle from Rem) with a factory HS stock. The only thing I don't like about it is the double palm swell. I do have large hands and it still seems "FAT" to me. A single swell would be fine. Most of the shots I take are from 250 to 550 or 650. I don't mind all the 26" barreled rigs with large optics, I prefer them actually. All but my hornets are long 26" with one hornet at 24". I'm still looking or just keep what's on them. Wanted a little less weight than the laminated one, but keeping the varmint barrels.

If you can find one, the Remington VLS stocks are the same as the HS ones cept w/o the palmswells, though not all HS one have theme too.

Choate: Varmint Stock.... ( designed by maj John Plaster US Army ret. ) Perfect for bi-pod and bench..you can also add weights if you make the switch to bench and tame recoil..

All of my VLS stocks are heavy wood laminate. I have 4 I bought new and just the one VSSF II which has the fiberglass HS stock. What VLS has the HS stock on it ? Thanks

Alf...that looks nice...correct me if I'm wrong but is the edge fill hollow compared to the other McMillian stocks?
Thanks again

I don't consider a varmint contour barrel belongs in a walking varmint build......

Alf...Would you explain the all details of your rifle ?
Thanks

Sure.....

Bat melanited HR action with integral picatinny rail and recoil lug, Rock 22" #3 eight twist, chambered in a tight necked 6x47 Lapua, bedded in a McMillan Classic pattern stock with Edge fill, Nightforce 2.5-10x32 with MOAR reticle sitting in lapped Seekins rings, and a Jewell trigger. Weighs an ounce or two over 8 pounds.

I would listen to Al on this one..... Oh wait, I already did. I have a perfectly built walking varminter 6x47L in a McMillan Classic. Why would you need/want a wide forend for a small contoured barrel? Excess material and weight are not something I strive for on a walking varminter....
