Varing seating depth

List: I think Ive hit upon a good load for my rifle. Any suggestion on varing seating depth? If so what should I be watching for and/or expct to see?
Thanks,
lester

I think it depends on what bullet you are shooting. I am new to this myself but what I have learned shooting sierra's and berger vld's is this. For the berger vld bullets, you need to start with a minimum of .015 into the lands for seating depth. For the sierra matchkings, I seat mine right on the lands or maybe a .001 into them. I have had good luck doing it this way but these are the only bullets I can speak for.

Knowing where you lands starts is important for seating depth. If you have not done this I would get a stoney point guage to find the measurement for where the lands start. Adjust your seating depth in or out from that measurement.

You say you THINK you have hit on a good load is that because it is shoot well as in small groups.
If so you can adjust your seating bepth in or out .002" and see if the group tightens try a couple of groups if it does tighten try another .002" untill it starts to get larger then come back to where it was better if it gets worse on the first move come back the other way and try but only alter one thing at a time as in only alter the seating not the load as well. Once you have optimised your seating then you can play a grain or so either way just to tweek it that last enth.

If you are shooting VLD's they need to be in the lands. I usually stick them in somewhere around .012" to .015" and that seems to work out fine without exception. If you are shooting something like a Sierra, I usually find they like to be loaded in the lands,.010" to .015") or out,.010" to .020"), but not on the lands. I tend to favor in the lands, unless it's a rapid fire across the course set up where you need to mag feed and a little stiffness closing the bolt can create a problem, in which case I don't use VLD's and jump the bullets.

List: The cartridge is a 6mm/250 and Im using molied SMK 107s. To date Ive always seated them about 10-15 thousands out of the lands. Perhaps I should try a group 10-15 thousands into the lands and work my way out .005 or so while watching group sizes.

Good plan? At what distance should I be shooting? Ive been at 200 yds and can go out to 275 on my local range.

Thanks,
Lester

Lester,
Dosent matter what range you test at but if conditions are not perfect hard to tell if its you or the load once you start moveing further out i would be doing it at 100 yard unless you have really good conditiond then 200 would be the go.

Lester -- for BR stuff, I load up 3 shot groups in 5thou increments and fire round robin at at least 500yds,bwth bullets colored with sharpie to ID holes)...basically and OAL Ladder.

at 1K yds with this, I will see vertical appear, then disappear as you get to the sweet spot. Similar at 500.
