varget or h4895 in 22-250

I'm new to handloading for the 22-250 and don't want to
go wild with components. Also wont be shooting past 300yrds.rem 700 sporter 24' bbl,8 shots in .9 with 34gr imr 3031,52 speer hp and cci200, all stuff I had on hand. Being on here has got me wanting to do alot better. I'm interested in 52-55gr loads, looking for some help before shopping.

my old 22-250 used to like 35gr of H4895 and 55gr vmax. With the shorter barrel i think that powder would suit just fine. Start at recommended minumum and work up slowly.

I use H4895 for both 243 & 308 I find it a great powder I don't own a 22-250 but I can highly recommend the powder

My 700 likes a 50grn V-max with 36.0grns of Varget behind it. If I do my part the rifle will shoot 1/4' groups.

What worked great for me was, cci-br2,imr-4064,34.5gr)shooting 52gr sierra match king hpbt's. Just have to see what she likes. Start low & work up. Try different seating depths. Keep check on the wind. Try using a flag if you haven't. Make sure you're doing your part.Weighing powder etc...
Happy Shootin

My 22-250 will shoot around .3 to .5 inch with 55 gr Ballistic tips and Hornady SPSX over 35 to 36 gr of Varget or IMR 4895

50gr Nosler BTs on top of 36gr of H4895 ignited with CCI BR primers has produced cloverleafs for me in a Savage 110 with a Shilen 26' barrel...and the bullets absolutely devastate little critters!

I flipped a small bunny 3 or 4 feet into the air a few weeks ago.

I have standard RCBS dies, not bench rest) and weigh all my charges.what is the practical difference in say a bell and carlson, choate and h-s precision stock if they all have a full length bedding block as far is accuracy is concerned.

It's tough to beat the old tried and proved 22-250 load of:
Hornady #2249 52gr. BTHP match - 38.0gr./H380. I've never seen a decent shooting 22-250 that didn't shoot this load exceptionally well, and don't be afraid to use it on yotes.

My very first reloading was for a 22-250, tried a lot of different bullets, a few powders. Settled on Sierra 52 gr BTHP and 38 gr. of IMR 4320, that shot ragged holes for me in an Interarms 24' 'skinny' original barrel with a 1 in 14' twist. 37gr.of IMR 4064 did well too. I seat bullets just off lands in my gun. I was searching for ultimate accuracy, didn't measure group sizes went by how many hogs died. Being young and foolish didn't realize for years those hollow points are for ballistic purposes, not expansion, still most hogs I met died when a .224 streak of hot copper went through them. These loads were used in Tenn. not too much temp swing in any given day. Have new friend who had Savage 110 with heavy barrel that he had not shot until we met and started talking guns. Last weekend we tried it out with some of his factory Remington loads- 52 gr. bal. tips. 3-shots groups were under a dime. He has not touched the Accutrigger yet, I did not shoot the gun so can't comment on trigger. My old reloads shot cloverleafs in his Savage. Didn't have any trouble with bullet depth in his gun, if memory serves me I think they are .115 deep. I use an old Lee Machine Company Target Model hand loader, Lyman measure. I too wold like to try some Varget since I had some for my .308 but have not yet. Hard to fix what ain't broke. Sorry to ramble so long.

First .500' groups this morning! local stores were sold out of almost everything,I found one can of H380. speer 52hp and sierra 52hpbt,38grs in each, tried to get within .010 of the lands. one group is round and the other is vertical.both are great in my book, but which one has the most potential? should I try both again or is shape a important factor? I feel like they both will get smaller . my range is 5 minutes away so I can shoot often, going back today..

You could try a cci-br2 primer, but it looks like your barrel prefers sierra 52gr. You could try fine tuning, as in seating depth & powder weights. Could also try imr 4064 if you can get it. That's not a bad group for the sierras for how quickly you brought it all together. I,m sure others on this site have great ideas also.

The H-S Precision is a better quality stock than the other two brand mentioned, but it also costs more. Its quality is in the materials used, and the aluminum chassis embedded. Its also approved, and used by the FBI for tactical rifles, and the others are not.
However the B&C is a good stock for the price. And I have no personal experience with the Chroat.

BigFishMan, You are on the right track. As RJinTexas suggested and you have now seen, H380 just always seems to work well. Like you I have a 700 although it is a V. I had really good luck with H380 38.5gr and 55gr V-Max bullets. Mine were at .008 off the rifling. When the weather improves I plan to experiment with a little greater distance with this same load and then also try RE-15 and Varget. Both of these other powders have been suggested by reps from the bullet companies. 34.9grs of Re-15 with a 52 gr Hornady A-max is allegedly an accuracy load used by some manufacturers. Keep us posted & good luck, Peter.

I feel both these loads can out shoot me.
wind got up,25-30mph gust) but I shot anyway, 1/2 to 3/4' the second time. does the wind really matter at 100 yard? the sps stock is bedded and forend stiffened.considering something with a bedding block, would like a thumbhole. I'm going to shoot 2 five shot groups 3 or 4 days in a row. pick the best load and try br2's then up .5 gr and down.I'm trying to get a consistent 1/2' 5 shot load.

Bigfishman, If your getting .500 to .750 groups in 25 to 30mph wind gusts I don't believe I'd change anything. The great thing about H380 is it disperses so well out of just about any powder measure. Back when I was shooting a 22-250 and developing loads they weren't even making the 52gr Amax. I agree you should give it a try. I tried about every power that was suitable and nothing was as user friendly all bullets weighing 50 to 55grs.
