Varget dirty in .308 ?

I am breaking in a a new Broughton 5C, 1 in 13" twist, 30" long, chambered in .308 Win. (shoot, clean, shoot clean for 10 shots, then groups of 3, clean) My load consists of Lapua brass, Federal GMM 210 primer 45.6 gr of Varget pushing a 155 gr Lapua Scenar bullet jumping .015". Why is my barrel so dirty after 1 shot ? I use Varget in my 6BR (27" long Krieger bbl), and it doesnt get this dirty after 30 shots. Could it be that the powder charge is too light ?

^This. 45.6 is a relatively light load for a 155gr bullet. Start slowly working your way up another 1 to 1.5 gr watching for pressure along the way. You may start to see a cleaner burn as well.

I shoot 46.5 of Varget behind a 185 Berger LRBTHP. Burns really clean and no pressure. BTW, the bullets are mollied. I hope this helps,

my 308 with lapua brass and 155's is compressed before 45.0g varget. that said mine shoots well from 45.2-45.5g varget. who cares how dirty it get's so long as it shoot's good.

I have play with slow burning powders not that varget is slow .But to get a clean burn you must have pressure. If your not burning 98 % or better in the barrel your powder is too slow to be clean.

Agree w/ all posters. Don't over look a primer swap. Turned my 6.5mm w/ RL-15 from dirty to clean. Enhanced accy & ES also.

I use Varget in my 308 loaded at 45.8gr with sierra 168 match without a problem, Have you tried changing your primers? I use CCI BR and they seem to work well,
good shooting Don
