Varget @ Ace Hardware

To my surprise, while at Ace I saw a shelf full of 1# of varget. This in Phoenix Az. near where I live. At $29.95 a # it's not the cheapest price, but they had it. Bought six #'s just because. Anyone in Phoenix that has to have it go to 32nd street and indian school.

It's been rumored a bit that the reason for the shortage is New Zealand. Apparently they recently enacted legislation that forbids more than one container of gunpowder to be aboard any ship coming into any of their harbors. Since the powder is produced in Australia and NZ is it's first stop, kinda puts a choke on the supply.

I've heard some far out stories but this one bout tops them all.

This is the exact reason there is a huge shortage...

Really, 6# is not hoarding. They do sell the stuff in 8# jugs. I'll shoot two to three times that this yr just in my TR rifles. Now if it was 60# on the other hand I'd say someone was bordering on hoarding.

Just so everyone knows. I'm aware of the shortage, which is why I bought it. If any comp shooter in the Phoenix area needs varget it's theirs for what I paid. Mr. Curtis I'd be happy to let you hold on to it since you're more involved than me.

Uncleduke,
Keep an eye on Bruno's as well. I walked in there earlier this month and they had a BUNCH of 1 lb containers of Varget. I bought two as I was almost completely dried up. Word seems to have it that NOBODY is getting 8 lbs containers as Hodgdon isn't making it in those sized containers right now and is just trying to spread the wealth (NO I didn't vote for Obama), so to speak.

The "REAL" reason we can't get powder from Australia is the Japanese are attacking shipping from the Solomon Islands. As soon as Guadalcanal is captured by our Marines the supply of Varget should get through to the USA. ::)

P.S. Its not the New Zealander's fault, they are tied down in North Africa fighting Rommel. ;)

Six pounds is not much powder at all. You really need to get out shooting more. It is only about 900+ rounds of 308.

I never said he was hoarding or that 6#'s was a large amount. but for him to purchase "just because" as he stated is aiding in the shortage problem not helping. then he turns around and claims he bought it for comp. shooters in his area.....after I called him out on his statement. if his intentions were such to help comp shooters why wasn't it listed in classifieds . he clearly didn't need it according to his statement. its this mentality that's causing problems more than helping

What is hurting our sport more than anything it is the left and the Gov. How many times do we hear stories about the gov holding up thousands of pounds of powder.

If I used Varget I would have emptied the shelf. I use at least 12-15lbs a year so I don't consider the 22 lbs I have now as hoarding. I bought as many bullets and primers and powder last fall as I could afford as the stuff just keeps going up in price!

From New Zealand , yes there are some restriction on docking here with gun powder . As I recall there is a limit of one ship at a time rule . But thats not the worst of it these guys can ONLY off load powder on wooden docks, so when you look at how many wood docks are left it leaves only one dock in all of NZ that it can be off loaded at. I'm not sure if there is a limit that the one ship can have and yes the Hodgdon / ADI powder comes from Australia. Shooting sports as fullbore is all but dead over here. The NZ NRA only has around 300 members of which there were about 75-79 that shot the NZ Nationals last year , figure how your going to pick a Palma team with that and keep in mind that many of those are "B" and "C" grade shooters . Hope to return to the US in the near future , taxes here are out of this world. Oh and Varget powder $115 a pound !

With price escalation(inflation) of bullets, primers and powder, it is better than Money in the Bank. With cash earning less that 1% in a CD, shooting components have been a very good investment and appears to be even better in the future, just look around at what some are paying for primers, bullets and powder, even some retailers are marking up items just due to the demand craze for components. Some people even believe that those components will be the "currency" of the future if there is worldwide meltdown. Anyway, get while you can, for someday you may not be able to secure the powder of choice. Remember the old "thunderbird"????

Gets old hearing people whine. Fighting within the reloading community. Hoarding is buying all of it, not six lbs and telling the world where the rest is. Unless you just started loading there is no excuse to even be low on stuff. Where were u the last time this happened? People will either learn or be without. And then to attack others for their own negligence ?? Can't get political here, but self reliance is what I practice, not poor me, watch the news. Love or hate what I say, I want for nothing when it comes to components.

Thank you People. Never said what just because was for. I know alot of shooters here locally. We all trade supplies when needed. That's what I like about the sport. I've sent e-mails to friends about the availability of a powder in short supply here locally. So shoot me:)
