Vancouver Island Black Bear

My recently finished 300 WSM hunting rifle has drawn its first blood.

If you ever get a chance to visit Vancouver Island, I highly recommend it. It is one of the most beautiful places I've ever been.

I've been shooting this pretty much exclusively at 600+ since it was put together. Wouldn't you know it, when this bear presented an opportunity to shoot, he was at 79 yards! I put the 200 ELD-X through the shoulders and it dropped instantly. This is the first bear I've shot and I have a feeling it will be a long time before I top this one. The skull measured 19.5"!

Well now, that looks like a very nice bear. Any idea how old he might be?? I am guessing he didn't have to scrounge much for a full belly.

Hi Ryan, Nice! You got him!! What was the finish wt. on the rifle? Good seeing U again........

John,
It finished up at 9.5 lbs. With the Thunderbeast Ultra 7 installed, it will be just over 10 lbs.
I am very happy with this rifle. I can't believe how well it shoots.

I hope to see you at the MO F-Class State Championship next month. I'm working on the catfish this weekend. Wish me luck!

Thanks,

Ryan

Dosent look like you need much luck right now....Nice Bear!! Congrats!! see you at St. Louis F Class match next month...Neil

Nice bear. I love going up on north end of Vanc. Island. We used to see lots of bear once we left the blacktop out of Gold River. Saw some huge blonds and cinnamon on the tide flats driving in to where we went fishing.

Share the rug photos when you are done.

Steve :)

Sounds like the ELD-X did what it was designed to do. Great bear, congrats. That's a dream hunt for anybody. Is that weight include scope ?

Good to know. I'm building one that sounds close in specs. Just a 25" barrel. Sendero contour. Not the ATAC scope but an NXS. Should be close. Thanks. Looking for 10 or under.

I was given an estimate of 11-12 years on the age. No clue if that is accurate, but he was definitely a mature bear.

Good shooting. That cross shoulder shot is very deadly since it usually breaks the spine and they drop on the spot as yours did. Good hunting and fishing on Vancouver Island. Lots of good eating for both you and the bears.
