USMC Silent Drill Team M1 stocks

As many times as I've seen them perform, live and on video, I never noticed the grip on the stock was shaved down.

Seems to me that the stock would be weakened at this point. I myself was on a ROTC drill team and used M14s and later used 1903s.

We used to toss the M14s around and spin them with no problem. We also used a tight sling but the Marines use a looser sling. Maybe they find the stock and sling set up handles better. In any event watching them brings back memories of my team and all those racks of M14s in our armory.

I was always told that the drill team left their slings loose so that all the metal parts would give you that slapping noise during a movement. Metal against wood. A crowd pleaser when all of them get their movement is sync and makes one noise.

Inspection arms was easy with the Garand . It was easy to hold the rifle steady with your right hand while you opened the action with your left and then slapping the fore arm. It was really crisp. I was issued a M14 just prior to my discharge and opening the action with my right hand was really awkward.
The new 308 was a piss off cartridge and I was ready to move on.
That's just how I felt at the time
