using LR primers with Retumbo and a 300 WM?

I was wondering if this would be a problem or a hindrance? I am running this particular primer in a 1-10 twist 28" straight no taper 1.3" barrel. Load is 300wm Norma brass, 76.4g of Retumbo, Winchester LR primer, 215g Berger Hybrid .016 off..

I had lotsa problems with ignition on a 7mm RUM. Many were solved with using a magnum primer when using a magnum load and/or case. A hang fire makes a very over pressure condition, and not all are noticeable right at first, so the gun has taken a beating before you know whats up. If you must use a large rifle primer have the firing pin protrusion checked to at least get all it needs to fire.

I think you'll find, most reloading manuals suggesting magnum primers in magnum cases. I tried the WLR and CCI in my 264 win mag using US869. Not a wise choice on my part :-[

raythemanroe,
I'm wondering if Retumbo is the wrong powder for LR primers.. I see guys running LR primers in a WSM with H4350..

The guy that built my 300 WSM is a well known gun maker and he told me he talked to a guy from Winchester (several years ago) and was told to use regular primers in a 300WSM, so that's all I've used. Now I never used anything as slow as Retumbo.

When German Salazar tested all the large rifle primers for Coleman's Blog he found Winter primers to be the hottest. I believe Steve Blair uses LR primers for his 7mm and 300 WSM loads in F-Open with great success.

Keep in mind, you are igniting quite a bit more powder, in a longer column, with the win mag case.

That is what I am thinking, the WSM is better suited for LR primers and runs the intermediate powders more efficientlly.. I'm hesitant to try to push the 200+ grain bullets with faster powder..I am thinking my next barrel will be a 300 wsm..

I'm playing with this gun to see if I can drop some vertical, if it works I will see if it translates to my BR gun..

Ray, your thinking is on the right track. I've used nothing but H1000 and Retumbo in my 7rsaum with LR primers without any ignition problems. If I was loading for the WM or bigger I'd definitley use LRM's.

Not a 300 Win Mag, but using Retumbo in my .25-06 case (large powder column with slow powder), Mag primers shot more accurately with better ESs. I can't say it will mean the same to you, but Retumbo works better with Fed215M in my .25-06.

Fed 210M on left, Fed 215M in middle, BR2 on the right.
