Using bifocals now...

Has anyone found a way to shoot targets with bifocals? I used to shoot target using iron, peep) sights. Now I find that finding the front sight is quite the task. Are there any adjustments that can be made to continue shooting successfully?

Help from us aging four eyes...

After going to Bifocals, I found I could shoot open pistol sights w/o the glasses better than with. Im nearsighted so w/o the glasses the sight are clear enough and the target is fuzzy as it should be. A peep sight,I have never tried. Larry

You don't say whether you are near or far sighted, but here's what will work. Have a pair of dedicated shooting glasses made that will allow you to focus on your front sight; typically 1/2 to 1 diopter less minus than your distance Rx. Don't over do it, because the less minus is in the Rx, the more fuzzy the target will be. Unfortunately, this is life after forty. The good news is you can bi**h about it. I'm 62 and still shooting fairly well when I put my mind to it.

If you shoot under fairly bright conditions,Gehman makes an adjustable aperture that clips on to the Temple of the Eyeglass frame.

By stopping down the aperture you can increase the depth of field quite nicely and see both sights well.

Thanks for your responses,
I have a question or two, or three.
First off, Larry, ,I am short-sighted) my eyesight is kind of screwed. I am a left-handed shooter that has shot rifle/ shotgun using my left eye for as far as I can remember. My master eye is the left eye, done the finger test). But my weakest eye is also the left eye. So the highest prescription for clear eyesight goes to my weakest eye. You combine this with bifocals and it seems that each time you move your head, the earth rolls around with it. It is really difficult to establish a vertical/horizontal reference.
Now, for the questions:
#1: is it worth my time to retrain myself to shoot right-handed/right-eyed?
#2: Can I use my current shooting style and use optics,,read glasses, or diopter lenses on the rear aperture sight) to continue to shoot iron sights? NOTE: My trigger feel and muscles are already trained that way, read left-handed), but not my feel for the sight picture any more.
#3: Should I measure the distances between the front sights, both revolver and rifle, to set up an ocular prescription that covers that distance?,Are there any opticians, optometrists, ophtalmologists in this forum?)

I really want to shoot in a performing way again.

I feel your pain, my eyes seem to be getting worse by the minute as well.
Check this site, there is a lot to learn about getting the right glasses / equipment.

Hope it helps

AJ,

Thanks for your input. It seems that proper vision has more to do with how you present your case to the optical specialist that a generic 'thank you ma'am' version to a generic optician.
Some have mentionned that reducing the aperture in a rear sight will induce longer field of view. I understand that seeing as much as you can increases you chances of hitting what you are aiming at. Reducing an aperture in a rear sight reduces your available light. So, if you do not have all the available light, how can you make an accurate shot? Just my two cents, canadian) worth.

With the Gemann your not reducing the sights aperture.

Your looking through the Gemanns' aperture.

This is a device that clips onto your eyeglass frame

and can be flipped in and out of your field of view.

Usually theirs enough light for target shooting.

Hunting in deep woods is another matter.

Oh and never try to use the Varilux lenses for shooting!

They'll drive you crazy & it's a short trip ! LOL

Regards & Good Shooting

Thanks StevenDzupin, your first link doesn't work but the second one works.
Does anyone have comments on the 'Merit Optical Attachment'? The web site does try to explain it but I would like user input.

I tried to do their 'through the closed fist' example but the falling snow here is too thick... Oh, well...

Got my snowblower ready.

The Merit item is either a suction-cup attached adjustable aperture or one on a frame that can be positioned on regular eyeglass frames, so that the center of an iris is positionable on your sighting eye's center.

I've seen both, just not sure which one you're thinking of.

The principle is the same as an adjustable target iris for a rear match sight or a camera lens: the smaller the aperture you're sighting thru, the greater the relative "depth of field",i.e. objects near and far appear to be in sharper focus at the same time) of the scene. I used to use one when shooting competition pistol matches at my local club.

Of course, brightness diminishes at the same time so just how small an aperture is functional is unique to each shooter and lighting condition.

Depending on your sights, your sight radius, and the age and condition of your eyes, you may find a larger aperture gives you an enhanced sight picture where somebody else would be using a smaller aperture.

www.bjonessights.com/AR15.html look here if you are shooting service rifle. If you are shooting match rifle, I use a front lens and not the rear lens. I do not know why, but the rear lens did not work for me in the match rifle. Good luck!
