Using a CoAx Indicator to center a barrel in the lathe?

Is there any reason why a coax indicator couldn't be used to center a barrel in the lathe? I've only used one on a mill, but it's used to center a spindle over a hole. Couldn't you put it in the tailstock and use it to center the barrel to the tailstock axis? What's more, they're usually accurate to 0.0002". It seems like it should work... Thoughts?

Thanks in advance!

That is fine for centering the bore but if the bore isn't straight You can have a problem with barel timing Larry

Oh yeah that's a good point - it would take the place of the Interapid Dial Indicators and/or range rods right? The muzzle end would still need to be trued (at least pretty close) of course.

Rang rod and a intrepid is the way to dial In a barrel. With spiders at both end. Same with crowing . Larry

I will take that advice to heart Larry - thank you!

Am I right that people are dialing in the breech to "only" 0.0005" with the Interapid 312b-15? I've always used a 0.0001 dial (not test) indicator with a range rod. But the results with that are sometimes "iffy".

To do it right you should have 0.0005 or less at the chamber end of the barrel and the same number or less at the back of the range rod like 4 " behind the barrel . Larry

Thanks again Larry! I really appreciate the help from somebody who really does know what he's talking about!!
