Using 6mm Creedmoor in a 6.5mm Creedmoor rifle?

Just like the title says...is it possible/ok/safe to shoot 6mm Creedmoor in a 6.5mm Creedmoor rifle?

My story is that I went to pick some 6.5mm Creed up from the store for a friend... did an oopsie and got 6mm (instead of 6.5mm).

After doing some research, it looks like PSI's, cases, etc... are same. Basically, 6mm Creed necks down to the smaller bullet/projectile size.

The barrel may be a little bit big and twist may be off, but I'm guessing it would be OK running 20 through just practicing?
Any feedback is welcomed and thanks in advance!

As gently as possible, that is a really bad idea. The difference of bore size (nominal .264") and projectile size (.244") means that there is a .02" miss-match. At best, you will have a lot of copper fouling as the bullet rattles down the bore. You may also split necks. Most rigid rule of shooting: Never fire a cartridge in a firearm that isn't designed for it. No exceptions. Yes, people fire-form brass to create different cartridges, but this is done with generally reduced loads and under close control. Full-power ammo in a chamber mismatch is dangerous.

Thanks very much (as well as the other replies). These are the details I was looking for.
I know that I can do things like .223 in 5.56... it seemed like 6 and 6.5 were close enough, but I guess not!
Thanks again!

PS - If anyone needs a box of 6mm Creedmoor 105 gr BTHP Hornady BLACK, 20 rounds, and lives in Southeast Michigan, send me a PM, I'll give ya a good deal :)

.223 and 5.56 are the same bullet diameter (.224") and basically the same brass. .5.56 is generally loaded to higher pressure than .223. Same cartridges, different pressure levels.

Exactly... and that's what I thought most were concerned about, obviously there is more. Thanks again!

Yeah, I know......I started thinking: If I was stuck in a cabin, alone in the mountains and a big bear was pushing the door open and all I had was........

I'd throw a dozen live rounds in the fireplace and dive behind the woodpile...

A while back a friend and I stopped in a gun shop north of Pittsburgh Pa. I actually listened to a guy behind the counter tell a customer he could shoot 6 Creedmoor ammo in his 6.5 Creedmoor “but it might not be quite as accurate”. True story. True scary story.

Dave.

I have seen a few ruger precision rifles mismarked. Maybe they passed the test fire phase and they shipped them out lol.
