USERS: How Do You Want the Search Engine to Work? pls read

Guys,

You've probably seen that the search engine works much, much faster than before. There is a built-in feature of the search that you may not know about.

1. If you are on the Forum home page (with all the main categories), when you use the search (red button top of page), the search engine will look at ALL the categories.

2. Currently, if you are in a particular sub-category, such as the Varminter & Hunting forum, when you use the search (red button on top), the search engine will ONLY look at threads in that particular subcategory. This makes the search much faster and the results should be more relevant. (But you won't get results from other categories).

If you want to search the whole forum (all categories), you can just click on HOME (orange button top left) and search from there.

QUESTION:

Should we make the search "GLOBAL" all the time and from all places in the FORUM?

In other words, would you prefer to get ALL results from ALL categories when you are in a particular category (such as Reloading Forum, or Gunsmithing Forum)?

Please give us your opinions...

No. the ability to refine searches is good. You may just want to clarify the distinction on the site when searching.

I also like the fact that you can now search for a "smaller" word. Before if I searched for "BR" or "PPC" it would tell me that my word is too short, and I needed to redefine my search. It doesn't do that any more.

Another vote for the smaller search. If nothing is found a person can always search in a different category. Sometimes too much is too much, to scroll through when looking for specific info.

That said something is goofy with the "red button" search !

If I put in Laupa Brass then hit the red button, it looks for and finds "Search Forum" !?

The "Search Site" tab next to it works but the red button wants to go back to it's default words

Paul,

I for one prefer the option to search from within a specific category or search global from the home screen. Just the way it is now.

Again I would like to say thank you for your efforts and the hours upon hours you have put into this site.

AHAH! Houston we have a problem...

Necchi, thanks for pointing this out. The problem isn't with the search button. It appears that when you are INSIDE a specific topic, it restricts the search to just the posts in that particular thread... which is why you got a null result in your Lapua search.

We will fix that -- it is getting TOO narrow I think by just searching within a single thread. It should search a category at least.

Until we can get that resolved, just do your search from the category index page (e.g. Reloading Forum, Gunsmithing forum), or the home page (landing page where you log in.)

This may take a little special programming so please be patient.

FYI: "SEARCH SITE" looks at everything: All Forum posts, all our editorial articles, and even the Daily Bulletin. These are three separate databases. This is a google type search that may not be as fast... but it IS comprehensive.

Well thank you but that's not quit it,

You have "Search Fourm" locked into the white bar of the red dot search. When I try to delete or back space those words to replace them with my requested search, it dosen't care,
The red button uses the words "Search" and "Forum" to propigate it's results.

I get a wonderfull list of results for the words "Search" and "Forum"

What browser are you using? I cannot replicate the issue using Chrome, Firefox or Safari. That doesn't mean it couldn't exist for IE though- IE pretty much does it's own thing.

For me, when I click in the box, the "Search Forum" words disappear and I can type in whatever I like without an issue.

Can anyone else confirm/deny the issue and if so, let me know what browser you are using?

Thanks!

Actually, I do see the problem. I wasn't seeing it cause I don't try to "click" the Search button, I just enter my search terms and hit Enter. But if you do try to click the search button, it does replace your search terms with "Search Forum" again.

I believe I know what's causing that.

EDIT: It should be fixed now. Thanks!

On my iPad, the words "Search Forum" are present in the field box. If I don't overwrite these words and just hit the red search button, it will search for these words. If I tap in the field first, the preset words go away and what I type enters there. Press Search red button and all is good. If this helps explain it better, you must enter what you are looking for before you hit the search button.

I like it the way it is my only complaints are when I look on the forum from my smart phone everytime I want to click on something in the classified section amazon always wants to come up and I'm not sure if its my phone but when I post I have to type and then let the server catch up before I can go on. Thanks for all the hard work on the site guys

Jay,

I'm pretty sure what is happening to the poster is that: 1) the search in running in the thread only; 2) the search almost instantaneously returns ZERO results because it is searching only ONE thread; 3) the search box immediately returns to "Search Forum" by default.

That's what happened to me when I was in this thread page and did a search for "popsickle" (a word I knew would not come up). The search was complete in less than one second with NULL results and "Search Forum" re-appeared in the white box.
