Used gun issues

Well, I let one get by me at the last gunshow. I thought by know I had learned to look for issues when buying a used firearm but I guess I let my guard down and this slipped by me. I was wanting a 308 Win as I have LOTS of 308 reloading stuff. A dealer had a nice 700 Rem (?) in a H-S stock and looked like a Wyatt's detachable mag trigger guard and mag. A little looking and I notice the trigger guard assembly was cut in with a chain saw but I figured it was something I could fix with a little MarineTex and some sanding and paint. Aside from the lousy install on the mag assembly, the rifle looked really nice. A heavy barrel with a nice Leupold scope and rings and bases. Being at a gunshow, you really can't whip out tools and start taking a gun apart so I waited until I got home. I loosened the action bolts, removed the barreled action, then attempted to remove the Wyatt's. AIN"T happening. The previous owner bed the entire assembly to the stock. What a dumb azz! Just FYI, the mag fits and feeds as it should. Pulls rounds out of the mag just fine. So, my question is, is there any way to get the assembly out without destroying the mag or stock or am I just better off leaving thing as they are? My intentions were to use the Wyatt's on a different rifle and using a BDL floor plate assembly on the 308. If it means destroying the stock or Wyatt's, I'll just leave things as they are.

Like a heat gun, propane torch, hair dryer? I don't know what was used but what I can see is black and shiny.
You can start with a hair dryer but i suspect itll take a heat gun. Remember to use gloves after you heat it then gran onto it to pull. I get in a hurry sometimes and grab an action or bottom metal after heating. If it doesnt come out easily then use an iron on it

I just took a small pick and just picked at it a little. seems its white under neath. I have no idea what this guy used but its clear up to the top of the mag box and all the way around it. I guess he was making sure it didn't fall out. LOL! The action screws hold everything together. I see no use for the bedding other that maybe he was trying to fix the butcher job he did on the opening. What a mess!

LOL, as long as I don't turn it upside down it doesn't look bad at all. :)

@Pyscodog I’ve been watching you talk about buying used rifles on forums for gosh, 15 years? Ever thinking about a couple of full customs instead? You’d be ahead about a million bucks by now.
LOL, I have a few of those to, well, semi customs. I guess I'm kinda addicted to gunshows and buying and selling. My friends say I buy a rifle, get it shooting bugholes, then sell it and buy something different and start over. Its just something I enjoy. No kids to support, no wife yelling that I spend to much. Some I keep and some get traded. Just a sickness I guess but I don't drink or go to bars. Don't build hot rods anymore or 4x4 trucks and sold my Harley's. I spend a lot of time at the gun club and I just like messing with guns. I have way to many but seems there' always room for one more.

But to answer your question, I have considered a full custom rifle but if I had to decide what to build it would drive me crazy. I like them all. Kinda like pretty women. :)

Don’t feel to bad…….got my hooks in a rifle I had been looking at for over 20 years. Glad I didn’t pay more for it than I did, about the price of a new barrel. Long story short, got it home and loaded few rounds of ammo. Shot so far left I ran out of windage@100. Came home took it pulled scope base off, bubba had a drill press with dull bits………twice.

I bought it just to test drive the cartridge, 224 Clark. I hear and receive a lot of negative on it, much as I did when I started my 17 Remington project. Progress and technology has came a long way since the inception of both. Initial numbers and group from the bubba rifle show a lot of promise, if it works out as well as the 17 Remington I will be more than happy.
Lol, I did not need another project.

I've only had the rifle to the range twice and along with the stock issue, it had accuracy issues as well. I take blame for that trying powders I never thought really worked well in the 308. Mainly CFE223. I did try Varget and results were better but not good. Today I used R15 and IMR 4064 and must say result were much better. The R15 and 168 SMK's shot good but the IMR 4064 and 168 SMK's shot really good. The old rifle still needs some trigger work as it really sucks but my gunsmith buddy can fix that issue. He does dang good triggers and he's fast. Maybe while I wait if it isn't close to lunch time. Nothing gets in the way of lunch for him. I've about decided to just leave the stock alone. Its feeds smooth as butter out of the mag and the rifle looks good as long as you don't turn it upside down. LOL!!

Aside from the issue with the stock, I did get the trigger fixed. I bought a Timney Elite Hunter locally for it. The firing pin would drop and I had to hold my finger behind the trigger for it to set. NO BUENO!! I tried adjusting pull weight and sear engagement but the sear screw wouldn't budge. I guess another Bubba job. My smith hasn't been doing much because he's older and just to hot in his shop. A store in Tulsa had the Timney in stock and only a dollar higher than Timney so I just bought it there. A trip home and about 10 minutes and now I have a nice safe trigger. As for the stock, I think I'll just shoot the rifle like it is for now. It feeds fine from the mag and only looks bad if you turn it over. :)

About 20 years I helped a friend take apart a glue-in action. The wisdom back then was to freeze it. It worked. It came apart with a rap of a rubber dead blow hammer.

My Kryptonite is/are orphan single shots. It seems the last half dozen or more rifles I’ve purchased were all at least 125 years old, or more. I won’t pay stupid money, try my best to diplomatically point out apparent or potential issues to use as bargaining chips. I’ve walked away many times, but have also picked up some cool pieces. After I get them home, like you, I determine all of the flaws and correct them. I inspect, clean. and lube all the parts and pieces, install the odd liner to repair sewer pipe bores, clean the wood, apply some light finish to protect things, but always leave the patina intact. I put the rifles in safe shootable condition, take them out, and hopefully, preserve them to last at least another 125+ years.

What other bullets did you try?
It's often not a matter of switching up powders. I've had several .308's (incl a gasser) that wouldn't shoot 168's at all- and put 175's in cloverleafs. Never had a .308 that wouldn't shoot well with Varget.
