used barrel

I need to replace the barrel on my Shehane Tracker, Neiska J Action, 308 bolt face. The barrel to be replaced is a Krieger #8 benchrest, straight contour in high polish.

My question is I see a lot of barrels for sale on this web site. All I want to shoot with the replacement barrel is varmint hunting and paper targets (non competition).

Is it possible to get a used one and just screw it on or does it have to go to a gun smith and do the "Go and No" etc.

If possible what do I need to look for? I'm not really particular to caliber so anything from 22 BR to 308 would work.

Any advice will greatly appreciated.

The head space would have to be set. (go---no-go as you say)

Bob,
None of us can answer that. It is easy to know the threads on your Nesika, but have not a clue as to what your replacement will have. Don't know the tenon length and pitch diameter or if the bolt nose angle and clearance is in spec. I wouldn't dare chance it without a smith giving his blessing.

While you are at it you get an x-caliber barrel for used benchrest cost and have it set up to match exactly what you have. The x-calibers shoot quite well.
