Use Enough Gun!

I read Robert Ruark's book several times when I was a kid. It gave me the desire to see Africa with a rifle in my hand. I just finished up at a SCI show here in MN. My friends are from New Mexico and do hunts for Oryx on the Armendaris Ranch south of Albuquerque. They know I am a long range shooter and wanted to share a recent experience they had with a hunter who was a retired police sniper. He was using a 6.5-284 and shot the oryx at right around 1000 yards. They watched the bullet hit the animal, but with no effect. After much chasing, they were able to stalk closer and send several follow up shots. Look at the photo and see what they found. Nice group of shots into the vitals and then there is the other hit.....

Best I can speculate is the 6.5 was plainly out of energy at 1000 yards. Anyone seen anything like this?

I would think the energy at that distance will be quite low. The 308 with 175 grain bullet has roughly 526 ft-lbs of energy at 1000 yards.

Typically 500 max on 6.5s, anything over that gets a 208@3000fps. What bullet was he utilizing?

Hmmmmmmmm....Lucky that first shot ran out of steam. Looks like a gut shot to me. They would have been chasing that animal for a long time. Able to stalk closer and then put three shots in there! ! Seems a bit unethical to me. Just my opinion.

I'd guess that round at 600 would be out of gas for an oryx. I shot one with a .45 front stuffer, 200 gr. 40 cal. SST and the bullet stopped under the skin on the opposite side. IIRC, distance was 165 yds.oryx1.jpg oryx2.jpg

No way was a full power load from a 6.5-284 that out of gas at 1000. No way. Would like to know what bullet. Think there is more to this story

I have seen that before... Shot whitetail with a 9mm pistol with 124gr XTP. Front of the bullet mushroomed (some), bullet obviously tumbled and the base of the bullet poked out the other side of animal just like that. I tried to pull the bullet out but with mushroom I couldn't, had to cut skin with a knife to get it out. I'm sure the above is same...

Back to the story... I'm not sure why the title is for the story... A bullet not shooting all the way through a large game animal is not a big deal. I've shot our small (comparatively) deer with 7mag, 270 and the like at even 100 yards or less and didn't have an exit at times. Assuming the bullet is indeed sticking out is far side (and really the only explanation), other than the "neat" factor, no different than any bullet at any distance not completely penetrating... Regardless of caliber, or distance, the presumed gut shot is poor placement and would be a chase no matter the other circumstance. Maybe the title should be, make better shots...

Something doesn't seem right to me.

At 1000 yards a Creedmoor with 142 smk is putting out somewhere around 550 ft lbs of energy. Even with that energy that bullet would still go in.

I'd have to guess something is a miss with this story.

Ok, so a guy shoots a pointed bullet (type yet unknown) into the hide of a living african critter, it runs, wiggling its skin and bouncing all to heck and back, then he dumps three shots in a 50 cent piece and kills it. I call BS. That bullet would have flopped out. Looks to me like someone just stuck a bullet in a hole.

So wiithout abetter detailed story...a big fat whatever and two thumbs down on this one... and even then i am thinking BS.

Just my thoughts from here

The Eland has a hefty set of ribs..It's just possible that is what the (outside) bullet hit and never penetrated.

i have seen a couple mono bullets tumble and come out base first on the other side like that oe, for gemsbok aka oryx stick with the big 7s and 30s when your hunting them at distance.

A warthog shot with a 250gr mono out a 338LM.

Looking at that pic the hair around the bullet looks to have been pushed out, so it does look like the bullet came out on the off side backwards.
