Updated May 6, 2016

Effective June 6, 2016, UPS is changing the measurement that determines whether the UPS Additional Handling charge will be applied to UPS® Ground services packages in the U.S. The updated 2016 UPS Rate and Service Guide will be available to download on June 6, 2016.

Any package with the longest side exceeding 48 inches, instead of 60 inches, will be assessed the fee.*
The Additional Handling fee of $10.50 remains the same.
The change does not impact UPS Air or International shipments.

This change is being implemented due to the additional handling required for these types of packages in the UPS network.

* The rule that the Additional Handling charge will apply where a package’s second longest side exceeds 30 inches in length is not changing.

pretty much tacking on the additional $10.50 charge on the shipping of any rifle...

Good to know, but it won't affect me much.

UPS is my absolute LAST choice in shipping anything, and ESPECIALLY a rifle.

I haven't used them to ship anything in many years (I bet it's been 20 years), and always request an alternative if possible when buying and having something sent to me.

UPS = United Parcel Service

USPS = United States Postal Service

I'll use the post office (USPS), but refuse to use UPS.

I have posted this several times previously.

My software automatically checks all carriers.

The USPS is usually the cheapest and best. I have also had the least trouble with the USPS.

UPS, when I received my monthly invoice, their were always surcharges added to many shipments. Fuel surcharge or something. FedEx has always been the highest, I wish I new why.

For now I am sticking with the Post Office. I have used UPS exclusively several years ago, but got tired of the surcharges and surprises. FedEx, I have even brought packages to the local hub for them to double check the charges, and my systems charge matched theirs.

Shipping charges has been a big issue lately, but hopefully post like these will help most understand why shipping is getting higher these days.

JMO, Dennis

PS: On large shipments, 100lbs or more, I will shop the big carriers as well. I have found as much as a 50% difference between the carriers. I just received a 1,200lb package a few weeks ago, and the price with the carrier I used was 1/2 less than UPS & FedEx. I also check with Hot Shot'rs to see if someone is in the area and needs to haul something back, but that's a big hit and miss.

If you don't like the increase on the prices, throw your stuff in the car/truck and go drop it off in person. Then, figure out how much it cost you to get it there.
No matter how much you pay to have something delivered, you'll never deliver it yourself any cheaper. Go find something else to gripe about.;)

It's not so much how much it costs me to ship something with UPS, it's how much it costs me to REPLACE whatever was in the box, because UPS has a special ability to bust ANYTHING that you ship.

But, since we are talking about costs here....

It seems that they used the sky high oil (gas/diesel) prices as justification to raise prices a few years ago.

Now that fuel is about half of what it was at the peak, not only did they not lower prices to match the drop in fuel costs, they are raising them, again. What's their justification this time, other than "they can"?

On top of across the board rate increases, it takes "special handling" to ship a fishing rod that is 50" long, and weighs two pounds with packaging, but not a box 48" square that you can't get your arms around and weighs 70 pounds?

There's not a damn thing you can do about it either!! Just like going out and buying grub. You have to eat so no griping with your mouth full.
Prices at the market are jacked up so either you pay what they want or don't. The farmer is the one that gets the short end of the stick.
I figure the shipping companies can charge whatever they want. If you don't like it, don't ship it OR hand deliver it yourself. Then, sit down and appreciate how much it cost you to get that item from one place to another. You can bitch all you want, (and accomplish nothing) it ain't gunna change!

Wow... rant much?

Do you work for UPS?

Despite what you say, there ARE alternatives to UPS, and I *will* use them, *not* UPS.

I don’t like it either but theres nothing to do about it. Since Fedex went over to their system of charging by the size of the box instead of the weight their prices went up drastically for light bulky packages. (like a set of windflags) But from here they are still cheaper than UPS so I continue to use them. I will say their service has been good over the years. I’ve had a customer or two complain about it but that’s what it costs for me to get them to you these days which unfortunately is pretty much the end of the story.

Makes no difference who you choose to ship with. You pay what they want OR you don't ship. It's as easy as that.

A very good point! I have software that checks all carriers for the best price, I might as well sell the software because you are right.

UPS is hard on what they ship. Most of the employes don't give a crap about the packages, and when something is damaged, it's an all out fight trying to get them to process a claim, I tryed once and they won by wearing me out wasting a day or two on the phone. I used to work on ups and fedex conveyors, and it was scary thinking that somewhere in that jumbled up mess of big ,small, heavy packages all being crushed through the system was someone's expencieve scope or other fragile item. It's a wander more isn't broken. Not only the conveyor system, but the package handlers regularly "toss" the boxes on and off the truck. The size vs weight thing I understand. You could fill up a truck with a few big sized boxes with very little weight to them. A large box with say a kite inside or some other lite weight product with lots of peanuts would take up as much truck space as 10 cases of ammo that would have 200 times as much weight.

You have to package your part so it will withstand a 4ft fall straight onto concrete and survive, try it several times. If the package doesn't break open or get seriously damaged, your OK. These comments come straight from a Major Shipping company employee.

I'm sure that some shippers pad the freight cost, because they can. Just had a talk with our lgs about it as he has caught some at it. I agree shipping cost are too high, but some of these shippers add to the grief. Barlow
