Unusual day at the range with a Marlin 39a

Put a scope on an older 39a to just see what it would do. Shot it at 100yds in a 5-10mph wind at about 8:30. Got it close to sighted in (unsure of how much drift the 22lr would do at that range) and tried Federal Auto Match. Two thru the chrony, 1098 and 1123. Kind of tight group with about half the shots about an inch out. Half- Minute of clay pigeon overall with quarter sized group for 4 out of ten shots. Next was Federal bulk pack high speed hollow point. Same overall grouping and velocity at 1282fps. Next I pulled out some Federal ammo from a plain white box, kind of like you might see from the military. Just has Federal, then 36 gr. hollow point, then below that High Speed and a number in the right corner. Put 5 in a group you could cover with a nickle and one about an inch right and another about an inch left (variable wind?) and one a half inch low. What astonished me were the chrony readings of 5 I shot thru the chrony--1323,1321,1322,1321 and dupl. I think I remember someone saying that it was just Federal packaging of CCI mini-mags, but going to have to try this again with my other(and better trigger)39a and a few other 22's I have (if I can scope them!!).

The 39A is a fine rifle and is my favorite of all my lever guns. If I could only keep one (firearm period) it would be a 39A.
