Universal Depriming/Decapping Die?

Hi,
I am in the market for Universal Depriming/Decapping Die. I will be using it on 30-30 base wildcats but will also be using for .172, .204. .223. What brand do you use? Pros & Cons. What brand would you recommend? I lean toward Redding but am flexible.
Thanks In Advance
Doug

Re: Universal Decapping Die?

I have the Sinclair. It works well and gets the job done reliably. I'm sure what one you pick will work just fine.

I have had a full set of the Reddings since they came out and I use them on everything.

I love them, and have never broken a pin.

Re: Universal Decapping Die?

If doing mil surplus use Lee otherwise use Redding. Trick is not to bounce the die during decapping or you will break the decap pin.

Re: Universal Decapping Die?

I have the Redding universal one. It comes with a pin that is too large for Lapua 6BR flash holes, so I had to buy their .17 cal pin.

Problem with them is that the pins themselves are not replaceable. Instead, you have to buy the whole shaft with a pin swaged into it. With normal reloading dies, the replaceable decapping pins are cheap. With this Redding die, they are $10 each.

I use the LEE universal de-capping die.

And, I do have cases with small primers and flash holes. No problem!
As usual, LEE is best AND cheapest!

RCBS...if you break a pin...they'll send a few to your house free . Really doesn't matter... it's just depriming. I did have to slim down a pin for PPC cases. Just Chuck in drill and sand it down a little.

+1 on the RCBS

I use two.
A simple Lee for cases .308 and up; damn near bullet-proof and extra pins are inexpensive if you do bend one.
A Sinclair for cases with small primer flash holes (they send pin ends of both standard and BR size, nice) and little cases like 22Hornet.

hmm if you are concerned about price then get a LEE universal decapping die. My Forster is bent though no fault of it.

The Lee pin is .068" in diameter (I just measured a brand new one). Lapua 6mm BR brass has flash holes down around 0.059". How do you manage to use the Lee in 6mm BR cases without mangling the flash hole?

I used lee because it was available when I needed one.

It is easy to adjust and the replacement pins are cheap so I bought a couple and turned one down to do small flash hole cases (6BR). So far I haven't broken a pin. Knock on wood.

Michaelnel,

My Lee Universal decapping tool pin measures 0.062" and I gauged my blue box Lapua 6BR cases before I started. I have had no problem with this combo for 4 years!
Did you measure your cases before or after removing the burrs? I used a small drill bit (don't remember the size) in a pin vise first thing on my cases to remove the punch flashing.
I believe I also consulted LEE before buying this die as well.

Food for thought regarding the redding "small" decapping die , in the event you need to replace the pin assembly you can simply tap the hole that the pin goes through and use a conventional decapping assembly that utilizes replaceable pins of whatever diameter you desire. Saves from having to pay 20 bucks for one decapping pin.

I had the lee an actually sanded down the pin to fit thru the br (.059) flash hole. I ended up buying the Sinclair from a member on this site and it came with four pins. I like the Sinclair better but the lee will work just find
