This began as a flat top from McMillan. The unique part of it is that the 700 action has been converted to a drop port. Normally that's not a big deal with the short BR or PPC cases...you just make a round hole in the bottom and the case comes out neck first. But this one is chambered for a .30 cal case that's 1.875 long...the case is still at an angle when the end of the neck gets to the floor of the stock. Will start with this drop port length and go from there. Both pillars use a large head diameter 82 degree screws. The trigger guard is just held on by the small front pillar and screw.
Cipherin' out the drop port shape.
Drilled a 5/16" hole and then went through with a 9/16" aircraft style counter bore with a 5/16" pilot.
You know you're working on a McMillan when you get 'that smell' from the filler.
Swapped out the collet and used a long cutting length 9/16" end mill to extend the port length.
Once the final bedding is done, the screws will be lapped to the pillars for max. contact.
Did an initial mock up and it looks pretty decent. Still need to do some shaping on the top of the port opening.
Good shootin'
