ULTIMATE RIFLE REST

One of those days for questions I guess. I am about to purchase a rest of Bald Eagle quality but before spending $400+ would appreciate guidance in who actually makes the finest "of them all"? I am thinking along the lines of smoothest cut threads etc. I am also real keen to have matching front and back Edgewood bags so perhaps this has a bearing on choice?

You guys seem to have answers to most things quality related.

Sinclair makes a nice rest. I have a windage benchrest top on mine, and have used it for several years with complete satisfaction. I shoot registered BR, and I see a lot of them out there.

I guess Farley is considered the best, about $750. You will have to wait 8 to 12+ months for it. I like the Bald Eagle the best, mostly because of the course adjustment height.

I have used a Farley, Hart, Sinclair, Bald Eagle and like the Farley, Hart/Sinclair and Bald Eagle last. The windage adjust on the BE sucks. Didn't care for it, the Hart/Sinclair is basically same rest with different tops and I am using the Sinclair windage top. Farley is top dog, but mucho denero and a loooooooooooooooooong wait for them.

IF you are going to shoot 1000 yard BR, then also look at the Bruce Baers model. It is a front and rear rest for heavy guns mounted into one unit and then a middle plate is taken out after perfectly aligning the two parts.

The edgewood bags for front and rear are great and worth the wait.

Have a look at the rest made by Gary Hayes from Canada it's a 27 pound solid stainless steel work of art, and at $500 U.S. a real deal. Go to the for sale ads and check out my full race 6PPC for sale it's setting on a Hayes rest. Contact info is: garyjuliehayes@aol.com

Hello,
I am new here - very nice forum!

My first post concerns front rests. If it weren't for the wait-time, I would be tempted to order a Farley. I used one not long ago, and was impressed, so this "what is next best?" thread is very timely.

I also just read another thread, here) concerning Caldwell's "The Rock BR", and according to MidwayUSA, the issue with the somewhat troublesome adjustment with a weak spring, etc., has been resolved.

By just looking at the pictures and reading the descriptions, all I have to go on) there doesn't seem to be much different among what the Bald Eagle, Sinclair and the Caldwell The Rock BR can do or their main components. If anything, the Rock BR, which at $150 is by far the cheapest, 'seems' to look better.

Any opinions as to how the Rock BR compares with the others?

I never see the VIPERS rest mentioned. I looked for a long
time and ended up with a cowan. However when I get to longer distances this will be it for sure. Talked to the fellow and
he is very nice and built a lot of quality into it. Contact
is Bob Pastor. mailto:robpas@btc-bci.com. If that doesnt work
email me and I will send you the website. Cant seem to get it
from what I have.

I have one also, and here is the problem. The windage spring is no where near strong enough to move my gun when it's in the bags. I'm not too keen on the design, even if they say they have a stronger spring. There is also too much play in the top. Unless you are competing, these are not big issues, in fact you may not even notice them at all. For the average shooter, shooting casually at the range, this is a great rest for the money. If you shoot BR matches, the play in the top is a monumental issue. I have modified and completely locked up my top, and removed the windage feature. The rest is now "rock" solid, and will compete without any issues. I have enough confidence in it to use it this year in competition after the modificatoins. But I no longer have the windage feature, not that it was useful in the first place on this rest. I love the base. Too bad Caldwell does not grasp what Benchrest means. If they did, they would have made this rest with a very solid top that did not require modifications to remove the play, and coincidentally removing the windage feature. They could have just made a non-windage top, and it still would have been a good buy. They did a great job on the base, but that top is just awful. I think the marketing dept must have designed that top. What were they thinking!!!!!!!`

I believe I read somewhere that another option for the Caldwell BR rest is to just replace the top with a Fudd or Hoehn. I think the base is not to bad but the top has a little to be desired.

The Rock BR front rest is quite tall, you will have to use a taller rear bag with it. Most rear bags are about 3 1/2 inches at the center grove, of course it will also depend on what stock you are using, but it is a consideration.
Good luck,
Gary.

I just got my Bald Eagle slingshot rest cast iron. With anything you get what you pay for.

Not to say there are not bargains out there, there certainly are. I am sure "The Rock" will do a good job, but if your a serious LR/BR/F-class shooter I would hesitate. I would hate to be shooting clean and then pull a 8 or 9 because of rest issues.

If your a weekend shooter or just beginning and funds are limited I would try this rest. However I am going to be shooting a WTC Custom rig chambered in 6.5x.284. I know the rifle will shoot, I am confindent that I am a decent shooter. Why would I want to take a chance on a more reasonable rest?

Farley, Sinclair, Bald Eagle..and others....are what the big boys use..So that is what I am going to use.

Just a curiosity type question; What makes the Farley so much better than all of the other quality rests. I have a Cowan and it's as good as anything that I've bought out of the Sinclair, MidwayUSA and another catalog. Not knocking them because they are quality products but what's so special about the Farley?

I am probably a good person to answer your question as I have went through 2 Bald Eagle rests with tops of every type..including a compact joystick top and have ended up with a Farley Coaxial for this reason: After several years of BR competition I finally figured out the best way to lower my agg, or shoot my best score is to get all my record shots off in the same,or at least reasonably close) condition .....to achieve this goal no other rest I have tried equals the Farley in performance.
With the trend in IBS towards 7 minute matches, I am glad I made the investment.
Ditto on the rear bags, I had every style of bag known, and I finally found a happy place with an Edgewood Gator filled with 25# of heavy sand.
Buy the best, cry once is advice I was too stubborn to heed....and yes I got into BAT actions........eventually.

I am surprised not to hear about JJ rest. I was lucky enough to use one last month...wow! I was able to order one today...can't wait to get it.

Take care
