types of ccompetitions

Are there any matches that are just to see who can hit the farthest target with the first shot at multiple distances?

I have heard of balloon busting events but I don't know the specifics. Sounds like it would be fun trying to hit a 6" helium balloon tied on about 5 feet of string.

what i would like to do is,compete in some sort of
long range shooting. mainly with factory equipment.
this way it really gets down to the reality of shooting.
becuase not everyone can afford the br guns and have
the time to put into the reloading process.
i think it would get more people to the shoots becuase anyone
could be competetive

I think you have it backwards. Factory rifles and factory ammo brings an element of luck into the equation. Usually it's bad luck. Last year we had a group of about 5 guys come out to a few of our 100/200 br matches. They wanted to shoot factory 'tactical' rifles and factory ammo. Even using FGMM their results were pitiful.

Some of them had spent as much as I had on my used Viper 30BR. My gun is worth as much or more than I paid for it. You can't say that about a new factory rifle. The old saying about only crying once really rings true for me but having a rifle that makes me look better than I am is priceless !!!!!

I am sure the guys shooting a factory gun wouldn't have looked pitiful if they were shooting against others shooting factory guns. I think that is what jraney is wanting to do.

Jraney, I believe your best bet would be to set up your own match at a local club. Get the word out a few weeks in advance and let everyone know that it is just for kicks.

I had the 30BR Viper for our score matches. For our group matches I was using a Savage action with a SSS/Douglas 6mmBR bbl [ no turn neck ] and a Stockade 100/200 BR stock. This $800 Savage would smoke the tactical rifles. The Savage never beat a real BR rifle at the end of the day.

The factory rifle/factory ammo shot pitiful scores. Pitiful is pitiful. How can it be fun if you never know where the bullet is going ?

do a search for " Sporting Rifle Match " it is a group out of Colorado that run the match out of the NRA center at Raton NM I dont think they have a factory but check it out sounds like a lot of fun other than that I know of a couple of UKD steel matches that will be held this summer here in Oklahoma but again no factory class that I know of but I heard that it is a bipod front rest only when I get a match flyer I will post it here

Sure - rimfire matches are common. Position shooting, biathlons, benchrest - you name it. With the rising cost of center fire ammo, there is even a movement towards some rimfire "tactical" matches at reduced ranges.

jraney - not sure where you're at - but you can check out http://www.westcoasttactical for info on matches up and down the west coast. There's a contingent in So Cal, some folks in Nevada, a hotbed in the Idaho, Oregon, Washington area and even some Canadians involved. We shoot a mess of different matches - conventional highpower, F-Class, and tactical stuff, including some rimfire.

We've had guys do well with factory rifles, but we sure don't limit the matches to factory rifles. About one or two good hot seasons of shooting and the factory barrel is trash anyway - then ya might as well go for a custom tube... And then the snowball starts running downhill along with your wallet. :D Before ya know it your once-factory rifle is sitting in a McMillan stock, has a Krieger barrel on it and you've got more in one rifle than you thought possible... Don't ask... It just sorta happened...

If you aren't on the west coast - no matter - there are matches of all sorts all over the country. Formal & Informal. I'm sure with a little searching, you'll find something that appeals to you. Matches are fun, and most of the folks you meet at them are good people.

Regards, Guy
