type s fl bushing die.

I just got a type s fl bushing die but no instructions . In the box there is two end caps for the decapping rod. Im assuming the silver colored one is the sizing ball and the black one is just to retain the pin? Also i deprime in a separate step can i completely remove the decapping rod? Or does it need to be in there?

Thanks.

I love type s FL bushing dies as they will do all case work in one step. For me, FL and bumping the shoulder, however, is best done before inserting the bushing (usu takes 3-4 cases) then lock the die in position. i can feel the shoulder bump easier than if the bushing is sizing the neck at the same time. Getting consistent bump of the shoulder is my biggest problem, so I anneal my brass after second firing, after first if loads are stout.

The Redding type S FAQ states that if your case neck thickness varies more than .002 to use the expander with a slightly smaller bushing. Meaning even Redding doesn't think using a expander is not the end of the world as many people think.

Tech Line & Tips (FAQs)
Bushing Selection

The above methods of determining bushing size require that the cases being sized have a fairly uniform neck wall thickness or have been neck turned. If the neck wall thickness varies more than 0.002", it may be necessary to use a bushing a couple of thousandths smaller than your calculations indicate, and then use a size button in the die to determine the final inside neck diameter.

Question: Do I need to use the expander button that came with my Type "S" Die?

Answer: It is advisable to use an expander button to maintain consistent neck tension if the case necks have not been turned to a uniform wall thickness. However, the expander button can be replaced with the Decapping Pin Retainer (included with your Type "S" Die) if the user does not wish to use an expander button.

I know they dont come with the bushings. I also plan on neck turning the brass so not running the sizing button shouldnt be a problem.

Now the next question is i have a bunch of once fired brass i want to neck turn. They will need to be resized then use the neck expander that matches the turning mandrel. Can i use the bushing die to do the resizing? The reason i ask is i have read contradictory info on wether bushing dies size the whole neck or not.

Thanks

That is correct, bushing dies do not size the whole neck, there will be a small portion at the bottom of the neck that won't get sized

Can i use the bushing die to do the resizing?
My 243 win Type S fl bushing die does not size all the way to the shoulder, even when the bushing is down as far as it will go. I fl in a standard die before turning.

I ask a long time ago if others bushings size all the way. The answers were mixed. Seems some do, some dont.

They typically do not size all of the neck and I much prefer the whole neck be sized for neck turning, as in your example. You can order or make mandrels in just about any size.

What non bushing die would you recommend to use before neck turning?

Now with brand new brass they should only need run through the expander die not through a sizing die correct?

If your fired brass has a neck ID larger than the pilot in your neck turner you'll need to size the neck with a FL die first, then expand it with the appropriate mandrel so it fits the pilot in you neck turner. I prefer Redding, so if it were me I'd use a standard Redding FL die. You'll want to measure the necks of your fired brass because it's possible, depending on how much neck clearance your gun has, the necks won't be larger than the pilot, so measure before you do anything.

With new brass, you should be able to just run the madrel/expander in the new brass and move on to neck turning.
