TWO NEW IBS 600 YARD RECORDS

SHall

Silver $$ Contributor
Congratulations to Larry Isenhour. At Oak Ridge, Tenn. this weekend,8-25-07)I got to witness Larry break the IBS 600 yard single target Light Gun group record with a 0.943 inch group! All were in the 10 ring for a perfect 50 score- which will also be a new IBS 600 yard single target LG score record. That will be hard to beat! Condition were not "perfect" either. Switchy winds of 5-15 mph. There were several large group shot over the day. It could not happened to a more deserving fellow. Larry is a great guy and a great competitor. Samuel Hall

P.S. Terry Brady- I bet you will call in sick for work next time and go with us!

You're right--Larry is definitely a deserving record-holder. He truly is one of the "founding fathers" of this web site. Way back in May/June of 2004, before we even launched, Larry provided a ton of information that eventually went into our initial FAQ and competition pages.

Larry was shooting a 6 BRX with 32.8gr of Varget powder, along with the Lot 559 Berger 105gr VLD bullets. NOTE: these were the bullets that some folks complained about, resulting in the die being polished. Just shows you that maybe they were pretty good eh?

Larry shoots a mild load, running about 2910 fps, with a .272 no-turn neck. His brass was two and a half years old and had been reloaded 15-18 times without annealing. He neck-sizes first then resizes the whole body with a .308 die, this is longer than a 6BR body die so it sizes the longer BRX case from top to bottom).

Here's the target and the gun. The rifle has a Stolle Panda Action, Lilja 3-groove 8-twist barrel with 2500 rounds on it. The stock is a one-off custom built by Larry's brother. It's walnut with a layer of Curly Maple in the middle. Handsome!

i was there.....it was a tuff day to shoot at 100 yards much less 600!! even the wind was HOT.....but larry was hotter !

Sam,,,I had a very good day, and so did you...Samuel Hall won Light Gun group and score so congrads to you.

George, it was great to meet you. I sure hope to see you at more matches and you are right, it was hot in Tennessee.

600yard bench rest competition is tough. Three years ago a 3 inch agg would usually win light or heavy. Today it seems like it takes an agg in the low two's to even have a chance. There have been several aggs in the ones this year at Piedmont, so one has to be on top of the game to win.

My gun is a very common Panda action, RBLP with a Lilja 3 groove barrel. It was smithed by Mike Davis. In fact the reamer that chambered my gun has chambered several guns that have set records over the last three years. I can think of six right off the top of my head.

The stock was built be my brother Robert,Mike) Isenhour. He is good with wood as you can see from the pictures. The stock has a long forend and about a pound of weight in the butt. It tracks good. I use one of Butch Lambert's rest tops on a Hart pedestal. It has improved my shooting.

As the Moderator has said, I use Berger 105gr. VLD bullets, Lot# 559. When these bullets first hit the market I was out of my usual Clinch River bullets, so I tried them. They shot better in this barrel than anything I had tried, so I bought a couple of thousand, and have been shooting them since.

This Lilja barrel is 25 and 1/5 inches long. when it was new Davis chambered it for a 243Ackley and I didn't get it to shoot like it should so we cut the chamber off and chambered it for the 6BRX. The barrel has at least 2500 rounds through it and it is still going strong.

The scope is a Nightforce 12x42NXS. It is a good scope.

If anyone has questions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me. I will give you my opinion and listen to yours. This site is probably the best place on the net to share information about our sport.

Hey Larry,
Great shooting, you won't forget this for a long while. It sure takes a lot of work to get there. You have wonderful equip. and it takes it to win, but I know how many people have great equip. and just get by. Your work and dedication is what did it for you.

I was shooting under the same easy-up on the adjacent bench a,about 3 feet between the benches). Larry and I shot our record shots, starting to finish, within just a few seconds of the same time. My group measured 3.7" wide which means conditions were nowhere near perfect. That also means Larry really had that 6BRX really tuned and exhibited excellent gun handling.

Grats Larry.

BTW, that wooden stock looks even better in person than the photo.,2,500 rounds on that barrel???-That's what he said. Must be using a very pleasant lot of Varget)
