Twists

If a 6MM BR with a 1 in 8 twist will stabilize everything from a 55 gr. bullet to a 100 gr. VLD, why do barrel makers offer 1 in 10's, 1 in 12's, 1 in 14's etc.
I had planned on having my new rifle rifled 1 in 12 to shoot 75 gr. V-Max's, but if it makes no difference why not give myself the latitude a 1 in 8 would provide. There are local Groundhog shoots that go out to 600 yds.

Just because a fast rate of twist will successfully stabilize a specific range of bullets doesn't mean that it's the optimum rate for that weight range.

Experience has proven that the slowest twist rate that will stabilize a specific bullet will yield the best accuracy and highest velocity with that bullet.

I would go with a 1~8" twist and therewith, be able to try all the various bullets. Infact that is what I did with my 6mmBR and 22-250.
Why 22-250's are still sold with only 14" twist barrels is amazing to me. Can't imagine why Remington won't change their attitude on twists...
