twist rates

Other factors come into play beyond just bullet weight. It's the length more so than weight, velocity, elevation, etc. are all part of the equation.

Generally, a 220 Swift/22-250 can run 55's, or maybe 60/63's, with a 14 twist.

221/222/223's need a 12 to run the same bullets, generally.

The older 50gn expanding bullets (pre-polycarbonate tips) were all designed for the .222 Rem with 1-14" twist, likewise 52/53gn HP match bullets.

Sierra describes its 50 and 55gn Blitz models (flat-base that reduces lengths) as ideal for both .222 and .223 Rem in 12/14" twist rates. The old short and rather blunt Sierra 50, 55, and 63gn SMP (semi-point flat-base) models date from the .222 Rem era too. If the 63gn model (Sierra p/n 1370) is still available it will be the heaviest design that will likely work in your twist rate, but it will have a lower BC than many more modern designs.

I would wonder about getting any bullet design to work well in the old triple-two at 500yd. .22-250 Rem as a minimum, and even it struggling a bit at this range too compared to some cartridges and calibres?

I have had good luck with 50 V-max & likes in 222 w/14 twist. My PD loads have a MV of 3450 fps & easily make 500 yds. Rifles are Dakota Predators w/Douglas barrels (factory).

Howdy !

Fo a .22-250 or a .220 Swift of customary barrel lengths, you coulc run 60s froma 1-14.

To do Sierra 65s, you'd probably want a 1-12.

Thanks,

for the replies all, I found a good deal on a 1-14" twist barrel but I think I am going to pass it up and pay more for a 1-9 or 1-8 twist barrel so I can shoot the 69,75, & 80 grain bullets.

Hack,

I misread your original post and thought you were shooting a .222 Rem for some reason. For 500yd, I'd definitely go for a faster twist and heavier bullets whether it's in .223 Rem or one of the larger case cartridges such as .22-250 and .22BR.

hack, i have had very good success in 22-250 at 3725 stabalizing 55 sierra blitzking in a 13 twist Hart. many pd taken at 500 plus, in a 14twist 22-250 the blitzking would not stabalize in another rifle. long bulletwith the plastic tip
