Which is better 1&8 or 1&8.5 for shooting 130 and 140

Assuming you are asking about a 6.5mm, my 6.5X284 shot the 139 Scenar very nicely from a 1:8.5 out to 1000 yards. I never saw a reason to use a faster twist.

Based on recommendations I've received from various sources including barrel manufacturers, you should be alright with the 1-8.5 if you stay in the 130 - 140 weight range. But if you start getting into the 142's and higher, might want to reconsider and go with the 1-8 Twist. I'm currently working on a 6.5 X 55 conversion and since I plan on shooting 140 - 142 Bergers, I going with the 1:8 after alot of consideration and input.

The three 6.5s I have have 1:9, 1:8.5 and 1:8.5 twists.

The 1:9 is a .260 Browning A-Bolt. It will handle everything up to 130 grain bullets and does well with 140 grain hunting bullets (not the H-VLD).

The 1:8.5's I have are a .260 DPMS and a 6.5 CM DPMS. Each does well with everything up to and including the 142 SMK.

If I could find the barrel I wanted in any twist I could get, I would probably go with 1:8 just to be sure. That said, if the barrel I am most interested in only comes 1:8.5 I wouldn't sweat it.

I'll give another nod to the 1:8.5 twist. My 6.5-284 shoots 140 and 142 gr bullets quite well with the 1:8.5 Brux barrel; 0.38 running avg. with 142 gr SMK. FYI, this is not a bench gun. I use this rifle for hunting (different bullet) and long range field matches.

I have a 1:8.5 it shoots 140gr bullets just great. I shoot the Berger H-VLD's with great success. Target match accuracy with hunting bullet construction. I could go from a match in the morning to hunting in the afternoon. Whats not to love?
