Twist rate for stabilization

I am considering moving to a heavier bullet in my 300 WM. I'm looking at the 210 MK or 208 AMAX for B/C and better (less) drop at distance. My barrel is a Rock Creek 11.25. The rifle is a hammer with 190 MK's. Will this twist stabilize either of these two if I keep the velocity near 2700 - 2800? Thanks for the input.

My Broughton 1-11 30 in. will not shoot Berger 210. The 1-10 likes them 30 in. For what that is worth.

I have shot 210 Berger VLD in a 11 twist at 3050 with a Weatherby case. 2700 to 2800 seems slow. I shoot them that fast in a WSM. Matt

The speeds I listed are on the slow side. If it will stabilize the 208-210's I'll move it up accordingly. Thanks for the reply's.

I can stabilize them in an 11 twist in a 300 WSM at around 2850. Now this is a Berger 210 VLD. The holes look good at 1000. I wouldn't be afraid to try a Berger 200 Hybrid. Matt

11.25 should be fine for the 210gn SMK even at 2,800 fps and under 'standard conditions' (59F temp, 29.92 inches mercury pressure). Hotter conditions and any significant altitude increase helps matters.

The 208gn A-Max is an exceptionally long bullet and so needs a bit more making this twist rate marginal on paper at any rate. However, it's not clear cut as work by Michael J Courtney (a forum member) shows that plastic tipped bullets do not need quite as fast a twist rate as the Miller Twist Rule calculates. So, it might still work out fine.

I am shooting 210s at 1000-1200,and 230s at one mile from my 1-10. The stability factore works out perfectly. Actually going to try 2k this summer at TVP in Ohio.

I have been trying to find an answer to the same question. I'm wanting to build a 300wsm to shoot 208 Amax's and want to use the slowest twist that will stabilize the bullet. I have been leaning toward a 1-11" twist. I built a 300wsm last year with a 1-12" but I just don't think it will do the job.

I would go with the 1-10.

But then, that is just my opinion.

The manufacturer will quote a twist rate for the least favorable conditions: sea level pressure and a cold winter day. Our stability calculator will allow you to accurately compute the stability for your actual conditions to see if the bullet will work in your application and rifle. See:

i have a 1/11 broughton on a 300 win mag..and i shoot hbn 208 amax's....
started at 3000 fps and am down to 2900 plus....
no issues in 5000 ft or so at 60 to 80 plus degrees...

208 Amaxes stabilized just fine in my F/TR rifle - 2550 fps from a 308 - 11 twist.

I shot a sea level from 45 deg F and up.

I haven't shot the 210 Berger, but I did shoot the 210 LBT JLK. It also stabilized.

If you want, I can measure the lengths on the few leftovers (208's) I have form that lot so you can do an apples-to-apples.

Busdriver,

I appreciate the offer on the measurements, but I have the 208's shooting fairly well on the first two rounds of deveolpment. Still tweaking them, but do see promise.
