twist for 75-80 gr. bullets in 22-250

Wondering if a 1-8 is necessary or if a 1-9 would work. I have been told that with a 1-9 stabilization becomes marginal at 800+ yds. Would the increased velocity of an Ackley Improved make any difference?
Thanks
Bill

I have a 1:8 28" PacNor 22-250. It shots the 75 AMax, 80 SMK, and 80 Berger VLD just fine. It will not stabilize the 90 VLDs. Walt told me so but I have to prove it myself. Keyholed...

I know people that have used a 1:9 Savage to shoot the 80 SMK and some who couldn't. I think that it on the line of stability and it is a barrel-by-barrel thing. The 75 AMax works fine.

Just my 2 cents, Tim

Tim Thanks. Probably best would be a 8.5 but it would take months to get one. I have a 8 Kreiger and might just go with that. Wondering about the magnitude of velocity loss with 8 vs. 9.

I have a savage factory 1in9 twist 22-250 AI and it will stabalize the 75 amax, 77&80 gr. nosler comps. but not the 80 gr. amax I have not tried the sierras. ronfoster

RONFOSTER i have a 1-9 savage and cant get the 75 amax and such to group any better than 2 inches or so at 300 yrd. Whats your load and depth etc. ED K

Yo Bro!!! the 'berger' sight shows a 70 gr vld & a 73gr.target bullet and recommends a 9 twist for either. The vlds will shoot but need to be into the rifling at least .010".

ED K my favorite load for my Savage 22-250 AI 1-9 is 39.0 gr. reloader 19, wolf primer, with a 75 gr. AMAX. C.O.L. is 2.665 this load is accurate to 600 yds. on steel sillouette (sp) ronfoster

wboggs,
Chamber up a 1:8" twist for the std 22-250 chambering & jam the heavy VLD's ahead of approximately 36 gr. of 4350 burn rate powders & don't look back.

I don't care for the polymer tipped bullets for distance shooting-some weren't to call.
