Twist for 17 Rem?

G’day folks,
Quick query. Building a new 17 Rem on a Rem 700 VSSF II. Old barrel is toast.
Been looking at barrel makers sites and cannot decide whether to go 10” twist or 9”.
My barrel now is a 10” twist, never had an issue with stability until the last 20 put down the barrel, keyholing at 100. Throat is gone and haze cracking for quite a few inches.
Have cleaned it to bare metal, no change, bullets still tumbling.

So, which twist is more ideal for the latest bullet offerings?

Cheers.

FWIW, there are many extremely good barrel companies out there but when it comes to 17's in particular PacNor and Lilja are two companies that always seem to be at the top of many gunsmiths barrel choice list.

I would go 9tw with either PacNor or Lilja.

For sure go with 1/9 unless you only ever intend to shoot 20gr bullets. My Cooper VE 17 Remington has a stainless Shilen 1/10 and it just won't handle 25gr VMax. Some guys do have luck with this combination, but why try? You might get away with a 25gr non plastic bullet in a 1/10 because.it is a shorter bullet, but why not just go
with the higher BC plastic-tipped bullet?

Looks like the consensus is a 9 twist, so it shall be.
I looked at Lilja, hoping to get a reply, do not know who the supplier is here in Australia.
If not, I will keep looking.
Can’t get a PacNor here as far as I understand.
Thanks for the replies folks.
Have always shot the Hornady 25gr HP or Remington 25gr HP when the Hornady wasn’t available.

Cheers.

I would definitely choose the 1-9 twist because in the bigger cased 17s I would want to take advantage of the 25 VMax and the 30s that really wack varmints.

I have a Shilen 10 twist barrel. Shoots the 25 gr V Max just fine.
Over time, I have found that it works for some, yet not for others. When I tried, bullets started to shoot huge groups and might have even started to show signs of tipping on target, but it was years ago and my memory is not fresh on it.
