I have always used a single stage press for my f class hand loads. I can see where a turret press may prove to be beneficial. What are some thoughts, pros and cons, and recommendations for the best turret press.
Kind of what I'm after. I prep only on my single stage now, and seat bullets on an arbor press.I use a Redding turret press but likely in a different way then most. It's in my garage where I do all my prep. I have a universal decapper in one slot, full length sizing die(.308) in another, expander mandrel for neck tension on another station, expander mandrel for neck turning lathe on another, 6.5CM sizing/bushing die in another, .223 sizer in #6 and #7 left open for something odd that I choose to load
Inside is where I prime by hand, drop powder with autotrickler and A&D and seat bullet with arbor press for .308 f class. I have a single stage press inside for bullet seating dies on the 6.5CM and .223 that are not F class loads. I keep powder, primers, bullets and scale in climate controlled area.
This way I never have to change and adjust dies for what I use the most. But again, turret is only for case prep. Loading is more precise inside.
ditto, for less than $15 each I can keep a separate turret set up for every cartridge I load plus the one with the universal deprimer and neck expander die. It sure makes life simpleI do all my reloading with a Lee 4 hole turret press.
I just pop the advance rod out when doing rifle cartridges.
Simple to change complete die set for a different cartridge, plus faster than single stage for pistol cartridges.
Don't forget the collet bullet puller.
As stated earlier, I probably don't use mine like others......At what point in this Turret press process are you cleaning or checking the primer hole and using case lube ? I don't see that happening in the process described above. Mass pistol who cares but rifle ? Are these using carbide dies that don't need case lube ? It sounds like a fired case, even if cleaned in tumbler media, is getting a dirty primer hole used. Even brand new unfired bras has to be full sized for the first load. How can you use a lubed case with a turret press without spreading lube all over the die interior ? - thanks
yep it has it's own turret becasue I use the RCBS one and need space to spin the little bar. If I put it in the turret with the expander and depinner I can't spin it 360Don't forget the collet bullet puller.
same here for rifle, and when I want to load pistol just pop the rod inI just use mine out of convenience of not having to set up dies but I don't use it like a progressive.
I personally think it would be beneficial to only have 1 die set up, instead on constantly changing out dies to do multiple processes. My loading process as a whole would not change, it would just eliminate having to set up dies.At what point in this Turret press process are you cleaning or checking the primer hole and using case lube ? Spot on!...If I needed\wanted to move away from a single stage for Fclass, I think I would move straight to a Dillon like Scott Harris, Eric Cortina, or F-class John have done. They've shared info here and a couple also have info on YouTube. It's pretty sweet.
