Turning down the end of a barrel

I have decided to turn down the end of my heavy barrel 308 to .750 so I can install a band for a ladder type front site or similar. I have a small lathe that I think I can make work. Would you see any problem in leaving the barrel in the action? I can remove the stock and bolt from the rifle and the barrel will fit though the hollow shaft and into the chuck and I would be able to turn down the end very simply. I just wanted to make sure that it would not cause any problems having the assembled action on the barrel. It would save me having to hire a gunsmith to remove and reinstall the barrel.

Thanks

Point well taken. I was not sure what the standard procedure was. When barrels are turned down or threaded for muzzle brakes are the barrels normally removed from the action? Just didn't know if it was necessary.

Butch is giving you some good advice. The potential problem with having a receiver sticking out of the spindle is that it is not well balanced and will want to vibrate and wobble. Once it starts to do that it can walk right out of the chuck faster than you can flip the off switch. It could ruin your barrel, the chuck and your day.
