Turning down a barrel

Hey there. Need some advice on turning down a barrel. I have a cooper model 22 phoenix in 22 250 that I want to re chamber to 6br. I have a new Krieger #17 heavy varmint in 6mm and compared to the factory barrel on the cooper it is much larger. Question is if I have it turned down on a lathe to match the factory cooper barrel would it affect accuracy? I have heard that it's not the best idea but not sure.Or would I be better off just finding a barrel with the same contour. Thanks.

I suggest you consult with Krieger. Since it is a cut rifle barrel vs. a button rifled barrel changing the exterior contour is supposed to be less of a concern. I bought a barrel from Krieger that was listed as a straight or heavier contour and I wanted a Palma contour which they performed for me as part of the purchase. I hope that helps.

Check with Nomad47 on how his turned down 6SLR shoots ......
Done really slow it doesn't seem to be a real bad problem...

Thanks guys, I phoned Krieger and they said not to turn it down any more than 2 contour sizes due to the risk of the barrel warping. The coopers barrel I think is 1 inch at the chamber end and the heavy varmint is 1.250. No idea what the 2 contours below a 17 heavy varmint measure out to. Hopefully it's doable. Thanks preacher, I will pm him and ask.

No need to PM, jaybray.

I bought a Bartlein HV barrel to chamber on a Savage large shank action. The Bartlein was 1.250" for 5" then tapered to .920" at the muzzle. Due to the Savage barrel nut being 1.120" in diameter, Preacher turned the barrel down to 1.120" until he ran into the taper - which was about the mid-point of the barrel.

Edit: Forgot to mention that the Savage/Bartlein 6SLR shoots fantastic.

Did you get it back yet? Curious to know? Usually blanks come in 1.250" from end to end and then are turned down to the conture you want... dont know if they need to be straightened or anything afterwards.. seems to be a mystical science with tons of opinions. Please let us know how shoots!

As long as your learning, "according to your profile" realize that most barrels come from the makers with the contour you specify.
Anything from a #3 on up to the straight 1.450's, 32" long...
No need to turn down a barrel unless you really can't find what you need....
