turn or not to turn

I am getting a 6 br built. Do I want to turn the necks or not? I have never turned necks brfor. Will it shoot that much better? How hard is it to turn the necks?

I have heard that some benchrest shooters are getting away from turning necks. There are a lot of guys using the .272 no turn neck in the 6br including myself. Well I'm not using it yet, but it is what my chamber will be. I have never turned necks before myself. How ever I would like to turn a few for no other reason, but to gain the knowledge how. In my opinion the only time you need to turn necks is if you have a tight neck chamber. If not don't turn necks I don't think it would make enough difference to justify the amount of work, or it's what a cpl of acclompished shooters have told me.

Edit: I guess it depends on what kinda shooting you are wanting to do with the 6br?

I no longer turn necks. I buy better brass. And spec reamers to work with the brass/bullet combination.

Better things to spend my time on.

passenthru: You did not say what the chamber neck diameter will be, and that will depend on the reamer used. The gunsmith should know the neck dia. Most of us are using .272" no-turn necks, that works really well with the Lapua brass-- use it as-is, right out of the box. Two of my 6BR chamberings are .265" necks requiring the necks to be turned to .010", three of the others are .272". I have not been able to find any difference in group sizes between them. Some believe in doing a light, clean up cut, and that's your choice if you think there will be any advantage. Learning to do it is no big deal, start with some scrap brass for practice, and in a short time it will become second nature. Or, forget turning and load as you would any other cartridge, if you will have a no-turn chamber neck.

It's really not needed unless the chamber calls for it.....
I'll turn just enough to clean up the out of round necks if it shows it's needed...

I have one of each. A 14 twist .265 neck and an 8 twist .272 neck. I'm not a match shooter so the no turn neck is the way to go for me. I don't see any accuracy improvement in my two rifles. Better yet, the Prairie dogs don't see any reduction in accuracy in the .272 neck.

I have done both turn and no turn and see no huge difference, I do however, check runout on the case necks. :o

I have seen that new Lapua BR brass is less than a half a thousanths of runout. At least the lot I have now.

I had to give it a try though, and the more I learn about it the more I don't like to do it. >:(

B-Man out

Just read Danny's comments on that link. Two years ago I bought a brand new Cooper 6mmBR with 1-8" twist - but the neck diameter was not given. Loaded up a few fire forming loads, and found the chamber neck was .2706" and my loaded rounds were .2713" (think I remember those to be correct). That .0007" difference spells trouble. Even if not dangerous, a round that tight will generate erratic pressures, causing all kinds of misdeeds on the target. Of course, I turned those necks down to give me about .003" total clearance. Point is, that even with a factory rifle, the fired neck should be checked against a loaded round.

These posts come up now and then and the replies baffle me. First you can buy great turned brass if you want to instead of doing it yourself. Second neck turning is EASY despite what some think. Third and lastly people do anything and everything short of loading standing on their heads for accuracy but somehow believe a case with ANY runout is as good as a case with NONE. Not trying to offend but thats my 2 cents.

Well I was going to stay out of this one but here’s my 2 cents. I turn the necks of all my cases.

Just to let you know, my wife’s 700 SPS Stainless in .243 would shoot 2” groups (5 shoots is a group) with Remington brass. Then I turned the necks, lots of brass in trash and ¾” groups on the paper at 100 yards. I can shoot 1000 yard F class okey with that rifle and its totally stock.

I have not seen a movement in BR in this direction....what I have seen of late is a trend to go with a neck diameter that will clean up with a minimum of brass removal...e.g. a .269 nk. vs. the old standard .262nk. for the 6 PPC.
I don't believe BR competitors want to loose control of this critical dimension, and be at the mercy of Lapua manufacuring standards from lot to lot.

A lot of new guys for some reason are scared of neck turning. It's not black magic, and once you have your neck turner set up it's really very easy. I use the Sinclair NT3000 with a carbide turning mandrel, and the el-cheapo Wally world Black and Decker rechargable screwdrivers ($18) with the Sinclair power adapter for holding the cases. Neck lube I use Shooters Choice FP10 in a soda bottle cap. Just dip the neck and turn, and an old toothbrush to keep the chips cleaned away from the cutter.
I can turn 100 cases in just a couple of hours, (with coffee breaks thrown in) and those hundred cases will outlast a new barrel. Does it help? Well perfect necks sure can't hurt especially with the minium time involved. The most time consuming aspect is setting up your turner for the desired cut. Once set you can forget it. The new Sinclair, or a Pumpkin makes this pretty easy but I still use the NT3000 since it offers me an unobstructed view of what I'm doing.
